“Can we accept poverty, sickness, loneliness, and bereavement with courage and serenity?  Can we steadfastly content ourselves with the humbler, yet sometimes more durable, satisfactions when the brighter, more glittering achievements are denied us?” (12 & 12, p. 52)

Analysis: The Quiet Superpower of Acceptance

Acceptance acts as a quiet superpower for the soul. Overeaters Anonymous Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions teaches us to love others. We must see people as they are today. Expectations often cloud our vision of reality. This practice builds bridges where walls once stood. We find deep peace through this simple shift in perspective.

Life brings heavy loads like sickness and grief. Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions asks if we can endure with serenity. Brighter achievements often stay out of reach. Similarly, Lena Horne suggests our carrying style matters most. Courage transforms a heavy burden into a source of strength. We choose how we respond to every hardship.

Maya Angelou believed that love liberates us (Angelou, 2009, p. 11). Her words remind us to embrace our shared humanity. Connection to the Great Spirit heals our internal wounds. The Wellbriety path offers a similar map for the journey. White Bison claims that “Acceptance is the door to the spiritual world” (White Bison, 2002, p. 54). This Higher Power grants us the grace to let go. Serenity flows when we stop fighting the universe. We walk a red road of kindness and truth.

Lately, I have accepted myself, just as I am. Though I may not be where I meant to be at this time in my life, I am exactly where I need to be for this moment. I’m finally beginning to live a brighter and more fulfilled life than I had in previous months, and that is giving me great encouragement to press forward with my goals.

When you’re in a congregate living setting, everyone must respect each other. I’ll take annoyance over disrespect any day of the week. I don’t have a problem with people who annoy me, that I cannot change and I can accept that. What I cannot accept is somebody who disrespects the house in a way where it affects all the other tenants… so I give it to God, then I discuss it with the manager of the house Then I go one step further and take pictures and send it to the manager… the annoying part of this whole thing is the person says” i forgot ” could you imagine how the house would look if the entire house,”forgot!???

When someone or something annoys me, I ask, what is it that I see in the mirror of my own behavior that needs to be corrected here. It is not for me to ask someone to change. It is my task to be the person I want to be and reflect that outward.

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful.

I really liked the last quote about how one carries the load. That was very powerful for me, and helped me to reaffirm my power (2).

I have been carrying this load far too long – and as Sister Lena tells us, it is not the load but how I carry it. I’m stuck here waiting for the revolution – waiting for the miracle. And the trick is I am the revolution – I carry the miracle. I can do untold things if I do not tell myself they are impossible. I can create the revolution in a single act of kindness – a single step past my fear and into love. I have that power – that capacity to choose. I am the revolution. I am the miracle.

I’ve had to accept one of my dear friend’s work schedule which feels like it limited our ability to get together. But with this acceptance the reality of the changes I must make become more apparent.

I’ve had to accept that I can be horribly absent minded, which is usually when I’m multitasking. But I’ve noticed when I’m more present I’m enjoying my task and can get into a sorta zen mode of operation which is highly efficient and gratifying.

I like the phrase… acceptance is the key, i really like that phrase because more often than not, something needs to change in me than in other people, God grant me the serenity to accept the things i cannot change other people situations.. etc

I have been so acculturated into the idea that more is better. The more pieces of green paper I have, the happier I am. And yet, not. We have seen too many celebrities lately who had lots of pieces of green paper and yet they succumbed to addiction or mental health problems. Is it a cop-out to want what I have vs. having what I want? Today, right now, I am dry, warm, and happy. A few more pieces of green paper will not make me happier – only my relationship with my Higher Power can do that.
