Analysis of:   To get to Where We want to Go, Here’s How We Embrace the Unknown

Today’s SFZ explores why letting go of pain is so difficult and how we can move forward despite fear. The Basic Text identifies a profound truth: many people cling to pain—resentment, anger, or self-loathing—not because they enjoy it, but because it feels familiar. Pain can become a form of emotional identity. As psychiatrist M. Scott Peck notes in The Road Less Traveled, “Mental health is an ongoing process of dedication to reality at all costs.” Letting go of pain means facing the unknown, which often feels more threatening than the suffering we already understand. Thus, pain becomes a strange kind of safety.

The passage from As Bill Sees It adds a practical and spiritual perspective. It acknowledges that fear will not disappear entirely. Instead, it encourages us to seek as much freedom from fear as possible and to develop the inner resources—both courage and grace—to face whatever fear remains. This reflects the thinking of existential psychologist Rollo May, who believed that courage is not the absence of fear but the decision to act despite it.

Emerson’s quote reinforces a deep trust in the journey of the soul. He assures us that spiritual progress does not cause loss but leads to transformation. This echoes Carl Jung’s belief that the soul’s journey through the unconscious—through fear, pain, and darkness—is essential to becoming whole.

Altogether, these passages remind us that while letting go of pain is difficult, the rewards of doing so—freedom, growth, and inner peace—are profound. Trusting the process and cultivating courage allows the soul to unfold in its truest form.

Embracing the unknown takes courage and vulnerability. Two words that might not seem connected, yet live side by side in strength. Every day is unknown, yet I have faith that life is as it should be and how can I fear the gift of today. The unknown is why I want to be here right now, as I am curious and want to learn more. The unknown is the promise that a higher power as I understand it to be will never ask me to go beyond that which I am capable of doing.

Good morning everyone + Happy Monday. I have been thinking about miracles lately. Not so much of the miracles that have been bestowed on me, + there have been many, but the miracles I have seen bestowed on others. It is very incredible to witness a change that happens when a drunkard is transformed into a sober person who is filled with new life, new hope, + new dreams. Welcome God into your life. He is here to transform you, to guide you, to empower you. Blessings. BB

I had to have a difficult conversation today and prayed for guidance. I think things went well, which is a blessing.

I am afraid to contact my friends on the weekend and evenings. I am afraid that they will be judgmental, rejecting or condemning. They have never been so in the past; in fact they have been loving and forgiving. Today I will reach out to a friend even though I am afraid.
