“How shall our unconscious – from which so many of our fears, compulsions and phony aspirations still stream – be brought into line with what we actually believe, know and want!  How to convince our dumb, raging and hidden ‘Mr. Hyde’ becomes our main task.” (The Best of Bill pp. 42-43)

An Analysis: How to Live in Harmony with Our Own Mr. Hyde Inside –

Step 2 invites us to believe in a power greater than ourselves. It opens the door to transformation. Carl Jung emphasized that spiritual experience can realign our fragmented selves. We need this shift to live with our inner contradictions, especially our “Mr. Hyde.”

The “Mr. Hyde” within us represents our darker impulses. Jung called this the “shadow,” the part of us we hide. Denying it increases its power. A.A.’s Big Book (p. 70) suggests prayer for “sanity” and “strength to do the right thing.” This aligns with Jung’s view that integration—not suppression—leads to healing. Richard Rohr also teaches that spiritual maturity involves accepting our shadow with compassion.

Co-creation begins when we let go of control. It means listening for divine guidance, not forcing outcomes. Al-Anon’s text (p. 90) recommends pausing for prayer before daily actions. This cultivates awareness and openness. It transforms small tasks into spiritual practice. Philosopher Martin Buber described this as “I-Thou” living—seeing the sacred in every moment.

Christian Morgenstern’s quote reflects the same spirit. The “hidden child” wants to co-create, not just observe. Psychologist D.W. Winnicott described this as the “true self” that thrives in play and authenticity. Co-creation awakens this part of us. It draws us away from shame and toward joy.

Step 2 is not passive belief. It is an invitation to participate in life with grace. We trust a Higher Power and act in alignment. This is how we co-create a new reality—one of harmony, acceptance, and daily renewal.

Having Grace with myself is so important. Allowing space for non-perfection, for making mistakes, but choosing every single day to try again with the strength of my higher power.

There are two wolves, which one I feed determines which one has control. It is no wonder that so many cautionary tales around the globe deal with this basic battle, the eternal tug of war between good and evil that rages within. The notion of Internal Disarmament is the story of stopping our own war, and in doing so, realizing that we are capable of change. With the humility of acknowledging each persons own higher self, higher power, we can tame the beast inside. This is part of the step work, part of the work of being human.

I haven’t had to deal with him as he hasn’t been as active since I stopped drinking. For me to stay sober over the long term, I need some thrill to satisfy Mr. Hyde. I need to scare the hell out of myself once in a while to remind myself I am alive. I need to take some semi “safe” thrills like skydiving or car racing on a track. Safe as opposed to driving home drunk from the bar or getting twisted and ending up in an orgy with 10 people.
