If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you …”

In today’s SFZ, the call to action, “Carpe Diem – Seize the Day”, urges us to live with purpose and urgency. Ancient Roman poet Horace coined the phrase carpe diem to encourage embracing the present moment. Today, phrases like “YOLO” (You Only Live Once) echo the same message, especially among younger people.

In recovery literature like It Works, How & Why, members are reminded that only one thing is required: the desire to stop using. This simple but powerful condition creates a safe space for anyone seeking change. Addiction expert Dr. Gabor Maté supports this idea. He argues that compassionate environments are essential for healing. When people feel welcome, they are more likely to recover.

The second passage, from Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, emphasizes radical inclusion. Even those with deep emotional pain or criminal histories are not turned away. This aligns with the views of Carl Rogers, a humanistic psychologist, who believed that unconditional positive regard helps people grow. When individuals feel accepted, they begin to heal.

James Dean’s quote captures the spirit of urgency and intention: live each day fully. This echoes Viktor Frankl’s idea that life is meaningful when we take responsibility for our actions and choices. Dean’s words reflect a challenge: don’t waste time. Make today count.

Together, these texts encourage us to welcome others with open arms and live boldly with purpose. They teach that healing starts with acceptance and grows with courage.

    I seize every day by wanting and ascertaining very knowledgeable thoughts, and wanting to be a positive participant in society accomplishing goals that I set out to accomplish. I’ve worked so diligently hard to get to more places in education, and have seen where new thoughts have emerged that are brilliant.

    To me, to treat each day like my last means to leave others better off than they were when I met them, however I can. It’s not avoiding regret, just trying to leave a positive impact. That doesn’t need to counteract my own sense of peace, either- there’s a balance in all of this.

    Seizing the day for me means making the most of my time here on earth. I enjoy the little things, such as my cups of coffee or the moments of peace before I go to bed at night. I attempt to truly embrace every moment I have.

    I seize the day whenever I start with good habits, meditation, journaling, excercise, affirmations, learning something, all before I get into more serious work. It frames my mind in a better place and helps me feel motivated

    Seizing the day for me all starts in the morning. I focus on getting centered I do that by asking God to direct my thinking… after that I put the armor of God on…

    I seize my sobriety every day. It starts right here on Zonr, working my program. This is where it starts. I read here the other day, I get God in my head before I do. Those first moments of my day are so sacred and important to setting the tone for the rest of the day. There have been times recently where I have allowed external things to derail this. I am working hard every day to stop that, to be aware of that which could through me off track, and mindfully recognize the distraction and move past it, as I continue to seize the day. It is my choice. I am going to Seize it.

    Thank you, I am grateful to participate and heal.

    I’m letting go. I really feel like I’m living an “authentic” without regard for what I think others expect of me but rather boldly going forward, in a loving way. I hope.

    Mine is really simple for me to gauge if I’m seizing the day and that’s not putting off anything even if it’s more convenient for me to put it off the next day or makes more sense do as much as is put in front of me that day/moment
