In today’s SFZ Step Three is examined as a powerful turning point in the recovery process. Bill Wilson, in Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, emphasizes that this step requires a “determined and persistent trial.” Without a full commitment to Step Three. Turning our will and our lives over to the care of a Higher Power and making progress in later steps . Becomes highly challenging.
Psychologist Carl Jung believed lasting change begins with a spiritual shift. This echoes Step Three’s intent: we surrender control to something greater than ourselves. Jung held that the human psyche requires connection to the transcendent to heal. This choice, to trust in a Higher Power, is what the text calls “the most momentous decision.”
Spiritual writer Richard Rohr speaks of this surrender as a move from ego-centered living to God-centered living. He argues that this shift transforms perspective, not through force, but through trust and humility. Rohr says, “Transformation happens when we stop trying to control everything and allow grace to take the lead.” That’s the essence of Step Three.
Brené Brown, a modern scholar of vulnerability and courage, would call this act of trust a brave and necessary risk. When we “show up” in faith, we begin healing from within.
The quote from Pythagoras reminds us that life’s deepest purpose is choosing good over evil. That struggle, in recovery, starts with surrender.
By choosing spiritual alignment, we stop fighting ourselves. We begin to walk in peace, not fear. This decision may be quiet, but its effects ripple through every part of life.
