“Deciding to live life on life’s terms is an endearing soul task. The immanent endearment reflects our acceptance of who we are while honoring the immensity of fate.” Paul Dunion, Huff Post Contributor Author and Psychological Healer

Living Life on Life’s Terms (2:45)

Relax Zen Garden Buddhist Meditation (7:09)

Analysis (English)

The passages reveal a journey from surrender to acceptance and vision. In The Big Book, the focus begins with humility. It calls for guidance from God or a Higher Power. William James, in The Varieties of Religious Experience, described such surrender as transformative. He noted that conscious connection with a greater source renews thought.

Next, The Basic Text shows the challenge of living on “life’s terms.” The writer acknowledges failure to manage life alone. This parallels Viktor Frankl’s insight in Man’s Search for Meaning. Frankl wrote that meaning is discovered in facing reality with courage. The text’s honesty about struggle creates the ground for growth.

Finally, Todd “Speech” Thomas uses music to translate pain into hope. His words invite travel to a place beyond suffering. This aligns with Joseph Campbell’s idea in The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Campbell believed that movement into a “new land” symbolizes personal transformation. The lyrical call to “understand your plan” echoes the spiritual quest found in the first two sources.

Together, these passages outline a process: admit limits, seek guidance, embrace life’s reality, then reframe pain through vision. The thinkers referenced remind us that surrender is not defeat. It is the first step toward a richer, more meaningful life.

CUANDO TODO FALLA, LEVANTAMOS LAS MANOS Y… ORAMOS –

«Antes de co-
menzar, pedimos a Dios
[o Poder Superior] que dirija nuestro
pensamiento.» «Nuestra vida de pensa-
miento se colocará en
un plano mucho más alto
cuando nuestro pensamiento esté
libre de motivos
equivocados.» (El Gran Libro, p.
86)

VIVIR “LA VIDA SEGÚN LAS CONDICIONES DE LA VIDA” –

«Antes de llegar a
la Comunidad… no podíamos manejar
nuestras propias vidas. No podíamos
vivir y disfrutar la vida como otras
personas lo hacen.» «Parecía-
mos incapaces de
enfrentar la vida en sus propios
términos.» (El Texto Básico, p. 13)

«Llévame a
otro lugar,
llévame a o-
tra tierra, hazme
olvidar todo lo que me duele,
déjame entender tu
plan.»

– Todd “Speech” Thomas (1968 – )

My life term right now is that I live with chronic pain, chronic fatigue, and other situations that are debilitating. Although I try to find solutions through them in the now I have to live with the fact that I can’t function exactly on a 8 – 5pm or regular day job basis, but it has taught me a lot of independence in attaining finances also. I think the larger plan is for me to study, and find different ways to acquire finances while getting where I want to get to in a work life

I’ve been reminding myself to let go often, lately. All I can do is everything I can do. Worrying is not an action.

Try to control things. Now that is some addict thinking, and I only know all to well from past experience. I have no control over that which is external. My responsibility is to control how I act and respond to that which is happening. And in taking action, help to influence the next action I have to take. But to control, or exert my will over that which my higher power has set into motion, no that does not happen. It is a peaceful acknowledgement that my job is not to run the universe, rather to be here now and experience life to its fullest.

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful.

The program teaches me to accept the things I cannot change.
Focusing on what needs to be changed in my life instead of putting so much on what needs to be changed in the world… and focusing on the bigger plan for me is to let God drive the car life is a long narrow Highway with many twists and turns, so I let him drive I’m along for the ride… the goal is to make it to the Final Destination. I take Jesus by the hand, let the holy spirit guide the way, and God has my back…

In regards to “living life on life’s terms” for me it gets down to not having control over the people, places, and things in my life. A character defect of mine is that I have a desire to be in control where I try to shape certain aspects of my life and when something does not go the way I intended I become discouraged and shut down. I have to constantly remind myself that my higher power will guide me in the right direction and I have to surrender. Something I continue to work on daily.

This can be hard. My instinct is to try and get around “life on life’s terms” moments rather than facing them and working through them directly. But I have to slow down and recognize these moments as opportunities for growth. That it’s OK to push myself outside my comfort zone. If needed I write down what the positive effects – often long term – that will result from really facing an issue. COVID19 has provided plenty of opportunities for facing uncomfortable life events, especially since I am furloughed from my job. But it’s allowed me to find new opportunities to connect with my family and via time for volunteer work, allowed me to find new communities to connect with. Given this is something I was sorely lacking before, this is of great benefit to me!
