THE BOND OF SELFLESSNESS –  “Make us servants of Your will and grant us a bond of selflessness, that this may truly be Your work, not ours – in order that no addict, anywhere, need to die from the horrors of addiction.”  (The Basic Text, p. xi on the self)

English Analysis

Painful honesty begins Step Eight’s path toward liberation. The Big Book teaches that asking to be “relieved of the bondage of self” opens the heart to service (AA, 2001). Service loosens the chains of ego and aligns one’s will with a Higher Power. Viktor Frankl (1946) wrote in Man’s Search for Meaning that meaning arises when suffering finds purpose through love and service. Similarly, Black Elk said, “The power of a thing or an act is in the meaning and understanding” (The Sacred Pipe, 1953). Step Eight transforms pain into purpose by grounding self-examination in service to others.

The Basic Text echoes this freedom through a “bond of selflessness.” In Wellbriety teachings, Don Coyhis (2006) reminds us, “Service is the key to staying well; it connects us back to the circle.” Healing grows when we replace isolation with inclusion. Selfless service becomes a medicine that dissolves false pride and restores balance. When we surrender false pride, we let the Higher Power guide our actions toward collective healing.

Nina Hagen’s call to “consider the whole picture” reminds us that liberation never occurs alone. Growth requires both humility and courage. The process demands letting go of control and embracing grace. Step Eight becomes not a list of wrongs, but a rhythm of restoration.

Las Razones Por Las Que Rogamos … “Libérame de la Esclavitud del Yo” – Paso 8

LIBERACIÓN DEL SERVICIO DESINTERESADO
“Libérame
de la esclavitud
del yo; para que pueda
hacer mejor Tu voluntad
[i.e., la voluntad del
Poder Superior].” (The Big
Book
, p. 63)

EL VÍNCULO DEL DESINTERÉS
“Haznos siervos
de Tu voluntad
y concédenos un vínculo
de desinterés, para que esto
sea verdaderamente Tu obra, no
la nuestra — para que ningún
adicto, en ningún lugar, muera
por los horrores de la adicción.”
(The Basic Text, p. xi)

“Haz algún
servicio desinteresado
para personas que lo
necesitan. Considera la
imagen completa, no
solo nuestros
pequeños
yoes.”

— Nina Hagen (1955 – )

Pregunta:
¿Cuándo te has sentido libre después de ayudar a alguien sin esperar nada a cambio?

Thinking about literally anyone else allows me to escape my own internal fears. Taking a step back for a minute, I remember that I will be okay. No matter what.

I felt free this morning after helping out my friend back home without expecting anything in return. She desperately needed someone to just listen to her and really HEAR her. The timing was inconvenient, but I picked up the phone, listened, and I ended up hearing things I actually really needed to hear myself.

When have you felt free after helping someone without expecting anything in return? ~

Daily I feel so blessed by others, by being my genuine self and showing up a mirror to others, I get to show them how I see them, so beautiful and kind inside, so many people have so much light, and some think that their light is too slight to light up all their dark, but if you can show people the light in themselves, that you see in them, well than people shine, and they bless you back by sharing kindess and love . It’s like a perpetual rainbow that stays, and shares and lights up the whole world with colour, one being at a time, and lit with love and kindness from Divine 🩷 this makes me feel free, I have no expectation I just want to love others and make the world a brighter place, no expectetions, but the blessings multiply xo

On a daily basis. I think I am fulfilling both of those questions on a daily basis. But just by answering that it sounds a little boisterous and kind of removes the quiet humility of the kind act.
But I believe that’s the way Jesus Works through me to help others.
We have all these wonderful quotes from all the Eastern philosophys and philosophers from around the globe, as well as the big book , the N.A. book and the 12 and 12…. it would be nice one of these days to read a quote from Jesus…

In my experience expectations are predetermined resentments. Resentments hurt me, not the person I held a expectation of. So when I am living a life that is free from expectations I feel free. Additionally, living a life of service and selfless builds a level of joy and peace that is unmatched without it. When I can be of service and carry no expectation, the freedom and love blossoms.

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful.

The longer I’m sober the more I see where I’ve been selfish and by practicing selflessness and helping others the less time I have to think of myself and am able to grow spiritually
