Analysis

As Bill Sees It suggests that awakening expands when we stay open to new gifts (Wilson, 1967). This view supports Step Nine’s call for steady action. Sharon Salzberg (2010) reinforces this idea by noting that renewal begins when we recommit with a whole heart. Their shared insight keeps the focus on progress, not punishment.

Moreover, The Basic Text (Narcotics Anonymous, 2008) states that recovery has no single model. This perspective creates space for diverse lived experiences. It also encourages humility when old patterns appear. When negative false pride rises, humility restores balance. Additionally, Wellbriety teachings remind us that “healing travels in circles, not straight lines,” which emphasizes the need for patience and continuance. Consequently, each setback becomes a doorway to spiritual maturity.

Furthermore, Salzberg’s reminder to drop self-blame aligns with many Indigenous recovery principles about returning to intention. These principles center the Higher Power as a steady guide rather than a distant judge. As a result, the individual moves from fear toward possibility. Step Nine then becomes an act of spiritual flight. Each amends lifts the heart. Each honest effort strengthens connection.

“If more gifts are to be received…” – As Bill Sees It

(As Bill Sees It, p. 8)

“There is no model of the recovering addict…” – The Basic Text

(The Basic Text, p. 91)

“If we fall…” – Sharon Salzberg

– Sharon Salzberg

I’ve awakened my spirit by keeping hopes alive that I can accomplish what I’m setting out to accomplish in life, even if no one wants to really get me(moi) at all or not. Words have been such a great tool in lifting my spirits too that have opened up so many new possibilities too. Gender – biasing, and racism in my eyes will always be great failures, I’ve seen some fall too. Their setbacks as I see it make my spirits rise to many new potentials for not ascertaining those types of actions, and/or belief systems.

It is always interesting to read about ways that AA teachings intersect with indigenous American cultures. Since reading these zonr posts I’ve been learning more about the wellbriety movement and it’s very inspiring. There is a lot of promise in the 9th step. I have achieved a lot of inner peace through the twelve steps and I have a lot of hope for the relief that the 9th step promises can bring.

Resilience and the very doubts of Thomas fuels my spirit to new possibilities. Resilience for I know that the best is yet to come in my life and I am excited by what those possibilities are. I am reminded often that for each setback there is a comeback. The very doubts of Thomas propel me into action because I do not know with certainty what is on the other side of the veil. While I may have strong convictions about existence after life on earth, I do not know with certainty what that is and choose to live today with great purpose to make each day with the productivity of someone that knows only this moment is real.

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful.

I let the holy spirit guide me in my Daily Journey. As long as I’m doing God’s will it’s alive and awake every moment of the day, but when I take my will back that’s when the Holy Spirit is grieved. I choose today to have the dynamic force of the Holy Spirit shine bright on my path so I may not stumble…

FEATURED POST FROM THE ZONR VAULT – “I must continue to grow spiritually or I’m moving backwards. While spirituality has not been my strongest link I’m willing and open-minded to growth.” (Kelli, 12/2/19)
