If “Fire is the Test of Gold,” then Adversity is the Test of … – Step 10

“THRU RAIN, HAIL, SLEET, OR SNOW” – “As we work the first nine Steps, we prepare ourselves for the adventure of a new life. But when we approach Step Ten we commence to put our … [new] way of living to practical use, day by day, in fair weather or foul. Then comes the acid test: can we … live to good purpose under all conditions?”  (12 & 12, p. 88)

Analysis: The Alchemical Test of Character

The post explores how we test our character through life’s friction. It Works, How & Why emphasizes that recovery teaches us how to live. Every day brings fresh obstacles to our doorstep. Our success relies on meeting these challenges with courage. Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions calls this phase the acid test. We must apply our new values in every storm.

True strength emerges when we face heavy weather. Seneca suggests that adversity reveals the quality of our inner gold. Stoicism teaches us to focus on our internal reactions (Seneca, 1969). We move past false pride to find authentic resilience. This shift requires constant contact with a Higher Power. Wellbriety wisdom reminds us of our deep interconnectedness. “The red road is a path of balance and purpose” (White Bison, 2002, p. 12).

Viktor Frankl serves as a powerful example of such endurance. He found meaning even in the darkest human conditions (Frankl, 1946). This purpose fuels our daily practice of Step 10. We stay useful regardless of the external climate. Our growth depends on this persistent and humble effort.

SI “EL FUEGO ES LA PRUEBA DEL ORO”, ENTONCES LA ADVERSIDAD ES LA PRUEBA DE… – PASO 10

“BAJO LLUVIA, GRANIZO, AGUANIEVE O NIEVE” –

– Séneca (5 a.C.

I hope I don’t sound self-righteous, but my serenity has been tested in the most unexpected way. In efforts to help myself, I asked for help more than once. My concerns were met with dismissal, disregard, and disrespect. I didn’t take matters into my own hands; I didn’t escalate emotionally; I followed protocol. It still wasn’t honored. The person I trusted to help me do what I couldn’t do for myself at the time gaslit me, labeled me problematic, then questioned and undermined my mental health. It has forced me to choose peace over comfort. And while I am at peace with my decisions, it hurts all the same.

When things get stressful, I can stay stabilized by relying on my follows in Alcoholics Anonymous. Any stress and worry that I’m feeling melts away when I’m in meetings. Even if the problems stay, my outlook on them changes and I’m better equipped to handle them.

If I stay in gratitude the peace and serenity flows through the challenging times…

I’ve had some issues with individuals or with stressful memories recently that challenged me to reign in my reactions and instead respond. To respond with serenity instead of react with the moment’s energy has been a pathway toward peace for me

I don’t take it personally. This is a perfect question for today. As I was waking up, I received a message from a dear friend who was mad about something I recently posted online. I was shocked that this friend was so bothered that they chose to write to me about it. In a world that is facing radical challenges right now, this seemed so trivial. I was grateful that the person I am today was not triggered by this and instead simply realized it’s not about me.

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful.

FEATURED POST FROM THE ZONR VAULT – “I’ve realized that sometimes even spiritual practice gets old and I don’t feel like doing it every day. I realize for myself I can get away from it for a week or two but after that I need to get back in to the groove.” (Orig. post Adam, 1/4/2013)

I find it unnerving when people impugn my integrity. Lately, I allow these slights to fall off like water off a duck’s back but on occasion, I am caught off guard. Consistency is what’s needed from me.

I have had my strength tested. Recovery is not easy. My will power is not all that there is. Trying is never good enough. Perseverance. Repeating. Not letting yourself be in control but your higher power.

Omg … I’m facing the motherlode of all tests … it has to do with racial and gender issues and it’s making me reach out for help much more than I’ve had to for a long time.

Without recovery I let the disease take control and my head boils and boils with negativity. With recovery adversity gets processed in a healthy way and I move on.
