“Self-examination … and owning up to our wrongs are critical elements of conducting our lives on a spiritual basis. By working the Tenth Step, we become more aware of our emotions, our mental state, and our spiritual condition.” (It Works, How & Why, p. 69)

Analysis: The Spiritual Stethoscope of Step 10

Step 10 acts as a spiritual mirror. It demands daily honesty. The text It Works, How & Why explains this process clearly. We examine our emotions and mental states. This practice yields fresh insight.

Constant self-searching builds a strong life. Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions calls this a vital habit. We must admit our faults patiently. This work clears away spiritual baggage. We avoid the trap of false pride. True champions embrace this radical self-awareness. Billie Jean King highlights this internal victory.

Ancient wisdom supports this modern practice. Socrates famously argued that “the unexamined life is not worth living” (Plato, 399 B.C.E./1997). We find truth through deep introspection. Similarly, Wellbriety emphasizes the daily check-in. White Bison (2002) notes that “the Red Road requires a sober mind and an honest heart” (p. 112). These tools connect us to a Higher Power. Growth depends on our willingness to change. We transform through persistent effort.

    Today’s writing prompt 01.06.2026:

When things get hard, I stay calm and kind by exercising the wisdom to know the difference. There comes a point in our lives where we become aligned. We use our talents, energy, and motion optimally. But sometimes our environment might not allow for that type of progress. You can respond properly. You can ask for help. But if a system is broken, there is absolutely nothing you can do to change it. And sometimes surrender is the only way out — not surrender to abuse, unfair treatment, and selective rule enforcement, but surrender to the truth you know inside of you. Broken systems do not champion growth. So to grow, you have to surrender to the unknown. Surrender to separating yourself from people, places, things, some systems, and energies that you’ve outgrown. Surrender to the fact that you have a choice. Surrender to the pains of being uncomfortable. Surrender to the fact it’s okay to grow even if it means separation, solitude, being misunderstood, and harshly judged. It’s okay to surrender to your purpose, your light, and your divinity — it’s yours.

Our greatest fear, is not that we are inadequate… Our greatest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

When things get hard or difficult you need to find out the root cause of it. At first there’s going to be some obvious disappointment and signs of being upset or mad which is normal. But let’s say for example you’re in a congregate living situation and someone is not pulling their weight, this needs to be addressed usually by a group conscious. And that person needs to fix the problem, change their behavior or both, but it can be dealt with in a calm and appropriate way through the group…

This morning, I was not as calm as I would like to be. Something happened that was a disappointment to me and at first I admit to being elevated. Fortunately I was able to cool the jets by recognizing that it wasn’t worth it and I could solve it. By being part of the solution and when possible, recognizing that its not a big deal before getting upset, I can chose to stay calm, stay kind and not put myself through any stress.

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful.

It’s easier for me to find negative things about myself. That being said … I don’t think I judge people as much as I used to.

Self examination in a sane way – I can only do this with meetings and program – otherwise I beat myself mercilessly.
