Analysis: The Art of Spiritual Maintenance

The post compares our spirit to a classic car. How Al-Anon Works suggests we must remove spiritual corrosion. We clean the engine of our soul daily. Active maintenance prevents future rust. We must respond quickly to signs of damage. This vigilance protects our inner serenity.

James Joyce views mistakes as portals of discovery. We uncover a brand new self through these openings. Admitting errors now stops morbid dwelling on the past. Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions emphasizes immediate correction. Consequently, we move forward with a lighter heart.

Nelson Mandela suggests that we rise every time we fall (Mandela, 1994). This growth requires help from a Great Mystery. Wellbriety wisdom supports this rapid cleaning of the spirit. “The Great Spirit gives us the power to change” (White Bison, 2002, p. 8). Healing happens when we act with honesty.

¿POR QUÉ QUITAMOS RÁPIDAMENTE EL BARNIZ DE LOS ERRORES PARA REVELAR EL RETRATO DE UN NUEVO TÚ? – PASO 10

“ What revelations have you made about mistakes you’ve made recently?”
Recently, I made the mistake of thinking that I am on an island of my own design. I made the mistake of isolating, of conveniently forgetting that I have a network of sober people who I can trust to call upon when I’m feeling particularly low. I “forgot” about these people who love and care about me, because I know that if I picked up that phone, one of those kind souls would stop me from doing what I so desperately wanted to do in that moment – take a drink. That unfortunate mistake cut my sobriety short just four days before I would have hit my nine months. I’ve come to realize that, while I am a resilient and independent woman, no matter how strong I am, my addiction will always be stronger. That is why we need each other for support. That is why they say that the opposite of Addiction is Connection. After I took that drink, something incredible happened – once one person in my network became aware, those that could, formed a safety net and worked diligently to get me back on track, back into rehab. A relapse that could have lasted months to years only lasted five days, which is no small Miracle for me.
As of 1/21/26 I was back at 70 days sober, feeling so grateful as I began the next beautiful leg of my journey in an amazing sober living, blessed to be living sober, one day at a time.

It’s been a little while since I’ve been to my home group, and when i got there today all the commitments had changed. It’s a good reminder of how long it’s been and how important it is to have that meeting in my life.

If I am in the wrong and make a mistake I don’t have a problem properly admitting it.
As a matter of fact I apologize right now for a mistake that the treatment center across the street made on my behalf. They called me asking me if somebody here had a particular make model and vehicle that needed to be moved, so I texted and called some people I live with and woke them up early this morning to ask them. Turns out, it wasn’t anybody from our house so I apologize for calling and waking people up so early this morning!

Right now, I can focus better on what I am working on now. Distractions are mistakes in focus and a miss at a goal of mindfulness.

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful.
