Analysis: The Wisdom of the Sacred Pause

The post explores the hidden dangers of answered wishes. The Basic Text warns that we often pray for traps. We mistakenly believe we know what is best. However, our desires frequently lead to spiritual imprisonment. We must shift our focus toward a Higher Power. Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions teaches us a new language. We stop asking for wishes. Instead, we seek the will of the Divine.

Saint Teresa of Avila famously noted the pain of answered prayers. We often lack the maturity to handle our requests. Rumi suggested that silence speaks the language of the Infinite (Rumi, 1995). Meditation provides the necessary stillness to hear this voice. Wellbriety wisdom deepens this practice of listening. White Bison (2002) notes that prayer involves talking, but meditation requires listening. Consequently, we find peace by waiting for guidance. We avoid the haste of ego-driven demands.

When I pray, I don’t use meaningless repetitions, I pray to my father about specific things, things that are not for monetary personal gain, so there is really nothing that can backfire when I’m praying for peace and love to come into my heart and flow out unto others

My prayers are prayers of gratitude and thanks. I no long pray about asking for things. This removes any potential of ego based disappointment. Gratitude, thanks and understanding of my higher powers will.

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful.

I don’t pray in the true sense of the word. However, what I try to do consistently when wishing for a certain outcome or position in life, is take a step back and do some introspective work. I find that wants and desires are often mechanisms used to escape uncomfortable situations or resistance against growth and learning.

I find that when I pray lately I pray forthe Grace to handle situations that I fear are challenges for me. Generally speaking those prayers seem to be answered on a regular basis which gives me an opportunity to thank my higher power once again. (12)

What a wonderful way to pray. For the grace to handle whatever comes up. I know when I am not in a state of grace because my heart becomes hard and I find I lack compassion. Praying for the grace…thanks for an awesome idea.

I try not to pray for things that I want, but instead to be guided by my HP’s grace. I also try and keep my wants minimal. That leads to less disappointment.

One of the things for which I am always extremely grateful is that I am nobody’s Higher Power. Whoo! What a weight off my shoulders from when I thought I was responsible for other people’s lives. Now I know the damage I have done to my own life; thank God I couldn’t make decisions for others. When I see the miracles that unfold in my life and the lives of others, I can only stand back, heave a sigh of relief, and thank God that Higher Power is in charge. Thanks, HP – you’re the Bomb!
