Zonr Post Analysis: The Necessary Pruning of the Soul

In today’s Zonr post framing, the New Year invites a necessary pruning. Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions views pain as a spiritual touchstone. We face emotional turmoil to reach eventual serenity. This process requires a careful inventory of our daily choices. It Works, How & Why encourages keeping helpful patterns. We shear away the rough edges of our character.

Sir Francis Bacon compared natural abilities to unkept plants. Study and discipline provide the required trimming for growth. Similarly, Marcus Aurelius noted that “the impediment to action advances action” (Aurelius, 2002, p. 55). We use our struggles to build internal strength. Every painful cut removes the weight of false pride. Wellbriety teachings echo this vital transformation. “The Great Spirit uses pain to wake us up” (White Bison, 2002, p. 112). Consequently, we find a Higher Power within our healing. We embrace the pruning to bloom with new purpose.

I’ve pruned rough edges by accepting the things that I cannot change and removing myself gracefully from people, places, energies, mind frames, and things that do not serve my higher self.

As long as i understand that I can’t change people places or things, there will be less rough edges to trim… being respectful to others, treating people how I would like to be treated is the goal of today and tomorrow

Making choices about how I want to go into this year. There are parts of my past that linger and are no longer serving me. While I remain an optimist in life, it would be harmful to myself to ignore actions in favor of words. People tell us who they are by actions and not by words. This year that means pruning that which is no longer in harmony or balance with who I am becoming every day.

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful

FEATURED POST FROM THE ZONR VAULT – “For me to be comfortable in my own skin, I need to maintain balance in all things and I have a habit of not doing that. I need to make sure I go to meetings, do my step work, exercise, get plenty of sleep, be of service to others, eat right, etc.” (Orig. post Adam, 1/1/2013)

I’m extremely passionate about issues around injustice and equity. But when I feel I’m being personally assailed I can react with such despair I can be immobilized for a period of time. 95% of the time it’s like water off a duck’s back but that tricky 5% still could use a lil more pruning.

I tend to be super detail oriented when i like a task. It gets borderline OCc. If I could channel that trait and apply it to my time issues (running late) I know I could be more effective in life.

My thoughts and feelings run together like a bad gang. They are so interconnected that they influence one another – usually to my detriment! Learning to listen to the subtle messages I give myself and how those messages create painful feelings is part of this journey. I cannot let my feelings do my thinking for me; I know that in the abstract. However, in the moment, it is hard as hell to separate the two. Blessings.

I so love Bette’s …the Rose. It reminds me that beauty requires getting rid of the old stuff that makes us ugly and that we don’t need any more anyways.
