Step Three of 12-step recovery encourages us to let go of control and trust something greater than ourselves. This shift calls for action based on faith. As It Works, How & Why states that growth happens when we act despite fear. This echoes psychologist Carl Rogers, who believed growth comes when we accept uncertainty and embrace change.
Trust requires courage. Author Brené Brown teaches that trust builds when we show up with openness, even when afraid. In Step Three, we do just that—we surrender our will and begin to trust the process. We act without seeing the full path. This mirrors Viktor Frankl’s belief that meaning comes not from control, but from trust and purpose in something beyond ourselves.
The 12 & 12 speaks of the spiritual rewards of faith. We begin to feel less alone. We stop forcing ourselves into roles that don’t fit. This sense of belonging reflects Maslow’s hierarchy, which places connection and self-acceptance as keys to well-being.
Lao Tzu’s quote reminds us that giving trust is the first step to receiving it. In recovery, we build trust by living honestly and showing up. Faith isn’t just belief—it’s a decision to move forward, especially when we feel unsure.
Step Three is a turning point. We surrender, not in weakness, but in hope. Let go of fear and begin to belong. We find that trust creates connection, healing, and peace.
