Analysis: The Art of the Sacred Pause

Step 11 invites us into a vast spiritual landscape. The Big Book calls this the Realm of the Spirit. This space remains open to every earnest seeker. It never excludes or forbids those who enter. Instead, it offers a broad and roomy home. We seek to improve our conscious contact daily. A Higher Power guides this inward journey.

Some fear a hidden religious trap here. It Works, How and Why addresses this common discomfort. Sponsors do not demand one specific way to pray. We find our own path to the divine. Voltaire reminds us that deep study reveals our ignorance. This humility opens doors to infinite wisdom. Similarly, Rumi suggests a field beyond right and wrong (Rumi, 2004). We meet our Great Mystery in that quiet place.

Wellbriety teachings simplify this sacred practice beautifully. “Prayer is when we talk to the Great Spirit” (White Bison, 2002, p. 129). Conversely, meditation allows the Creator to respond. This dialogue creates a life of endless discovery. We trade confusion for a clear sense of purpose. Consequently, our dreams begin to take flight.

Pregunta Concluyente

Viewing the program through the lens of the realm of the spirit coincides with my view of my Higher Power being The Universe. I believe that the spirit realm helps to guide us on our journeys.

Being quiet for a moment is hard for me, like a lot of addicts and alcoholics I have a hard time being alone with my thoughts. I enjoy the meditation practice of focusing on relaxing every muscle in my body, or of picturing my thoughts as leaves floating down a river. Seeing them pass by, acknowledging them, and then letting them go.

When I’m truly quiet I think about the universe and life and reality, my smallness and all the ways I do not know what life is and means. I love these thoughts and feelings. It’s mystery, the very magic essence of my existence itself. That, or some random intrusive thought 😐

For me, the realm of the spirit goes hand in hand with the Holy Spirit. I let the holy spirit guide the way, I take Jesus by the hand and God’s got my back…. because of this spiritual transformation it went from being selfish and self-centered to Love Centered and helping others…

When I am silent and listen I hear the world, nature, spirit, higher power. The profound nature of spiritual life is not supernatural for it. It is mundane, simple, and beautiful. It is the opposite of my life when I was using and avoiding my spiritual life, needing the chaotic noise at every moment to drown out my spirit.

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful.

I completely see the “realm of the spirit” as being “broad and roomy”. The more expand the ways I experience spirituality, whether through yoga, meditation or fellowship with others, the more opportunities for greater spiritual growth I see possible.

This is tough for me. I know God is all inclusive but are there really many paths…

Hmmm…yes, I agree with the broadness of interpretation and allowing for other possibilities. More specifically, I am not sure if I believe in God or a “higher power”. However, I am conscious that there is work that I too must do, regardless whether or not I do believe in some higher power.

Connecting to my higher power is a challenge – I am uneasy being close to anything.

Broad and Roomy, being left to ones own interpretation feels like the only logical way to talk about something that each person must experience for themselves. Putting conditions and restrictions would not seem to leave room for personal exploration.
