“Besides the noble art of getting things done, there is a nobler art of leaving things undone. The wisdom of life consists in the elimination of nonessentials.”  Lin Yutang (1895 – 1976) writer & inventor of the 1st Chinese typewriter

Analysis

Today’s Zonr post explores humility through prayer. It connects prayer with surrender, courage, and transformation. The passage states, “Any communication with our Higher Power is prayer.” This view supports a universal path that does not restrict spiritual growth. It values sincerity over ritual. William James, in The Varieties of Religious Experience, agrees that authentic spiritual experience depends on honesty, not form. He wrote, “The soul… knows when it is genuine” (James, 1902, p. 28). This reminds us that prayer matters most when it comes from the heart.

Step 7 teaches humility. Humility does not mean weakness. It means truth. Elder Don Coyhis of the Wellbriety Movement teaches, “Humility is to see the Creator as the source of our life” (Coyhis, 2013, p. 42). This teaching fits today’s Zonr message well. It reminds us to embrace honest prayer because it aligns us with guidance.

The Serenity Prayer adds courage. It empowers change. It also protects inner peace. Viktor Frankl wrote in Man’s Search for Meaning, “Life is never made unbearable by circumstances, but only by lack of meaning and purpose” (Frankl, 2006, p. 67). Prayer gives meaning. It becomes a compass during storms.

James Redfield writes, “Prayer power is real.” Prayer shapes both inner and outer worlds. When we pray, we shift awareness. When awareness rises, healing flows. Communities change. Prayer becomes an act of service.

Zonr Post Quotes (Translated)

EL ACTO SUPREMO
DE HUMILDAD –
“Some of us will recite a formal prayer… Any communication with our Higher Power is prayer.” (It Works, How & Why, p. 52)

LA ORACIÓN PUEDE CAMBIAR
EL MUNDO –
“God [or our HP] grant us the serenity… wisdom to know the difference.” (12 & 12, p. 52)

Significa claridad.

I grew up with a famous parent and was raised on the idea that I am somehow special and must do something special with my life. And while that has motivated me at times, it’s very egotistical at its core and has harmed me more than it’s helped. When I let go of those notions I find a peace of mind that I can just be me. That I am special because everyone is special. That life is precious for everyone and that I am lucky. That I don’t have to be xyz special thing to live a beautiful life. The pressure then fades away letting go of the ego and I feel more free to pursue my dreams holistically and sincerely. Not to be good or special but to enjoy life.

Step 7 deflates my ego by having me humbly ask God to remove these things that hinder me from living a productive life.
Knowing that I cannot eliminate these character flaws myself but truly believing that God can and will if i do the necessary steps it takes to do my part…

Part of letting go of ego is becoming ‘right-sized’. It’s to let go of the belief that it’s within my responsibility or ability to ‘make everything better’ all of the time. I can control my own conduct, not others’. Letting go of ego is also to stop minimizing or belittling myself. I am not intrinsically better or *worse* than another person. I’m just a person.

As I regain my health the ego becomes less powerful. For as sure as I know that I am, also do I know that, I am not. While paradoxical, the lesson is letting go of ego and its need to be all consuming loses its grip on the reality of my life. Day by day, with each distance from using the clarity continues to grow and I am more at peace with being and not the need for more.

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful.

The very idea of leaving some things undone is a new concept to me. I usually beat myself up for not crossing all the T’s or dotting all the i’s. I was recently invited to join in a squabble between two of my daughters. When I declined to get involved one chided me for “not having her back.” In the past I would have jumped in with both feet. This time I had enough recovery to know they started this fight, it is theirs to process. I left their reconciliation to them. I have peace of mind and they have their process. Namaste.

My home group is experimenting with additional mood lighting in our candle light meeting. Its a change that I’m uncomfortable with but I keep reminding myself to be willing to accept this change.

Yes. Letting go is the answer. I even encouraged that the dimmer to be brought back when it was missing this week to give this experiment a chance. That’s the new me, easy breezy, go with the flow 🙂
