Analysis of: Revealing Secrets from the “First Chapter in the Book of Wisdom”

Today’s SFZ explores the foundational role of honesty in personal growth, especially in recovery. Step One, as described in It Works, How & Why, challenges individuals to make a deeply honest admission—acknowledging the presence and power of addiction. Although this step may feel unnatural at first, it initiates the journey toward change. Admitting powerlessness doesn’t signify weakness; rather, it marks the beginning of self-awareness. Carl Rogers, a pioneer in humanistic psychology, emphasized that “the curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” This aligns with Step One’s purpose—by facing the truth, individuals unlock the potential for transformation.

The second passage, from Overeaters Anonymous, reinforces the idea that practicing new behaviors empowers individuals to evolve. Through daily repetition of affirming truths, they begin to reshape their identity. This mirrors the work of behavioral psychologist Albert Bandura, who believed that self-efficacy—our belief in our ability to succeed—is built through small, consistent acts. By affirming they are becoming “honest, caring, nurturing, wise, and effective,” individuals claim a new narrative that gradually becomes reality.

Thomas Jefferson’s quote, “Honesty is the first chapter of the book of wisdom,” underscores this entire process. Honesty lays the groundwork not only for recovery but also for authentic living. Without it, wisdom remains out of reach. With it, people grow in clarity, purpose, and compassion.

Together, these reflections reveal that admitting the truth, however difficult, leads to empowerment. Honesty becomes the gateway to wisdom, and wisdom becomes the guide for lasting change.

I have to be honest in my journals or in thought to me about what I want, and what’s preventing me from completely getting there. Pain has been the most hardest to manage accompanied by people around who act like they’re not in their right minds. Meditation, Reiki(healing), meetings, and so on have been great instruments for me in obtaining some of my goals, but now at this Sober Living I have greater goals, and hopefully it assists me in saving up too.

I was told that I could not use the plug during a meeting so I could not see my laptop charged which was very disconcerting. But I resolved that the next time meet at that’s space I will bring my own portable laptop table. Which feels very empowering for me.

Good morning everyone + Happy Saturday. I just watched a video of our planet EARTH. I am so much thankful for God’s beautiful creation. Our task is to keep Mother Earth in balance. If we can help to achieve this, we can keep our own lives sacred + in balance. Blessings. BB

Every day in traffic. Every day at work I am reminded I have no control over what kind of work will be thrown at my team due to others’ lack of planning. Every day when I need to wait patiently for others. Every day is a continual moment by moment reminder of how little power I have. But I’m okay with that.
