Attachment injury may show up as a hesitation to trust people or a process, as a reluctance to be part of a recovery group or sangha, or as a core belief that we don’t belong. (Recovery Dharma, p.11)

An Analysis on: Why Faith & Trust Go Hand in Hand
Today’s SFZ demonstrates how faith and trust are foundational to healing and connection. Both allow us to face life with courage rather than fear. In recovery, we often begin isolated and overwhelmed. The It Works, How & Why text explains that when we start to trust a Higher Power, we slowly release fear. This isn’t blind belief—it’s built through repeated experiences of support and strength that we couldn’t generate alone.
Sharon Salzberg, a prominent teacher in the Western insight meditation tradition, reminds us that trust does not require certainty. Often, we act with compassion or hope, not knowing if it will work. This vulnerability is the soil in which trust grows. Her view reflects the Buddhist principle of non-attachment to outcomes. We trust in the process, not the result.
Attachment theory offers further insight. According to Recovery Dharma, trauma can make trust feel dangerous. Early attachment wounds may tell us that others are unsafe or that we don’t belong. As psychologist Sue Johnson asserts, people are wired for connection, but fear and hurt make that need feel risky. Relearning trust—especially in groups or community—is essential. This takes time and patience.
Faith begins when we reach out despite the fear. Trust grows as those efforts are met with kindness, safety, and presence. As Brené Brown suggests, vulnerability is the path to connection, not a weakness. Faith lets us try. Trust is the reward of trying.
In recovery, we learn we’re not alone. That simple truth can change everything.
