“As far as
we can discern,
the sole purpose of
human existence is
to kindle a light in
the darkness of
mere being.”

– Carl Jung (1875 – 1961) Swiss psychologist

Well, Well, Well (The Woodentops)

Carl Jung on Shadow & Enlightenment Meditation (6:41)

English Analysis:

Carrying a message with integrity sustains the core of meaningful human connection. The first quote from It Works: How & Why stresses intentional reflection. When groups assess themselves, they protect what they value most. This echoes philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre’s idea in After Virtue—communities thrive by sustaining shared moral narratives.

The second quote, from Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, warns against actions that harm or misalign identity. This links with Hannah Arendt’s warning in The Human Condition. She cautions that public actions, if divorced from shared responsibility, erode collective trust. Here, the “storm signals” act like moral boundaries. Groups must remain autonomous and transparent to preserve their integrity.

Carl Jung’s quote brings a spiritual dimension. He believed our purpose lies in creating meaning despite life’s void. His words, “kindle a light in the darkness,” capture the heart of service work. Like Jung, Viktor Frankl in Man’s Search for Meaning emphasized that purpose emerges in service and struggle, not ease.

Today’s SFZ forms a powerful sequence. Reflection (inventory), responsibility (avoiding harm), and renewal (kindling light) outline a path toward both individual and collective transcendence. They imply that protecting what we hold dear (our values, our identity, our purpose) requires ongoing moral action. These teachings caution us to be vigilant, courageous, and deeply human in the face of confusion and ego.

Being an ear for someone can help that person…sometimes instead of giving advice sometimes someone just needs to be listened too…

Taking care of all of me even when it is not comfortable. Lately I have been dealing with some health issues and while it would be easier in some ways to ignore them. all the things I want, that I will achieve in life are on the other side of being truly healthy. Mind, body and spirit.

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful.

I am often guilty of taking a group’s inventory. I am also quick to judge an entire group based solely on a few of its members. One instance that comes to mind is a book study I attend from time to time. Most of its regular members nauseate me. They are arrogant, pompous and self-righteous. However, they have a knowledge of the book that I want. An analogy I like to use is I often had connections whom I could not stand but I wanted what they were selling. Its the same with this group. I can’t stand most of its members but they have something that I want–knowledge of the book.

My last share in a meeting was meant for someone specifically who has been suffering a lot lately, but stated in a general way for the entire meeting. So I contributed to that meeting’s primary purpose.

Sometimes I reach a dark place within myself that knows no Higher Power. I begin to pray whether I think it does any good or not. I remember that I do not have to live the way I used to live – pain and self-pity. When I can reach out to someone, anyone else, the darkness recedes and I am once again reconnected to my Higher Power.
