The King and The Spider

Vikram was a brave king. Once, he had to fight against a large army with just a few soldiers, he was defeated. He had to run for his life.

Vikram took shelter in a forest cave. He was very depressed. His courage had left him. He was blankly gazing at the ceiling of the cave. An interesting scene captured his attention.

A small spider was trying to weave a web across the cave ceiling. As the spider crawled up, a thread of the web broke and the spider fell down. But the spider did not give up. He tried to climb again and again. Finally, the spider successfully climbed up and completed the web.

Vikram began to think, “If a small spider can face failure so bravely, why should I give up? I will try with all might till I win”. This thought gave strength to the defeated king.

Vikram got out of the jungle and collected his brave soldiers. He fought against the large army. He was defeated again. But now, he would not give up his fight.

Vikram, again and again, fought against the large army and finally, after many attempts defeated the large army and regained his kingdom. He had learned a lesson from the spider.

I live with disabilities, and this gets hard to deal with, but still I strive to overcome this, and find resources, also opportunities.

I think adversity is important to go through as it builds up our stress resistance which is so important. The ability to thrive even in stressful situations improves overall quality of life by having fortitude and equanimity in the eye of the storm. Really helps with sobriety.

Overcoming adversity… setting goals and confronting situations instead of running from them. Strengthen the good Pride to gain self-confidence… try to view the challenges as an opportunity to grow.

Rose colored glasses. That is how people fresh from treatment are often described. Certainly that was how I saw the world after leaving treatment this last time. That I had it figured out and would immediately succeed at whatever I chose to do. I was wrong, the struggles continued, many still do. I had to be broken down a bit more before I could start to heal.

Since leaving treatment in March, I have faced some of the biggest challenges and adversity in my life, bigger than while using and before entering treatment.

Just getting clean/sober isn’t enough nor a promise of easy street. The adversity continues, yet with each day it is easier to overcome. I remind myself, don’t give up, keep going, be patient, trust in my higher power, and stay positive.

My life is better being clean/sober. Make no mistake. And with each day my life has the potential to improve as well.

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful.

FEATURED POST FROM THE ZONR VAULT – “The only adversity is caused by my work. On path to having to fire someone right after Christmas which is sad. At least its not before. And stress. Outside work it seems like doors opening everywhere for me. Which creates other stress in a way. So just doing what I have to and trying not to take anything else on.” (Adam 12/6/2012)
