English Analysis

Step Seven urges humility before our Higher Power. This step emphasizes honesty and the courage to change.

The dilemma reveals human resistance. Many wish for old habits like lying or cheating because they feel easier. Yet, as It Works, How & Why explains, comfort often tempts us away from truth.

The solution highlights character over ease. Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions reminds us that real growth demands honesty and love. Pursuing comfort often leaves character undeveloped, while sacrifice for truth forms inner strength.

Eleanor Roosevelt deepens this point. She states that people grow only when they face life with courage and honesty. Her words echo Aristotle, who in Nicomachean Ethics declared virtue emerges from consistent action. Both thinkers affirm that habits form moral character, not fleeting comfort.

Similarly, Carl Jung argued that avoiding the shadow halts growth. For him, facing uncomfortable truths builds integrity and wholeness. Like Roosevelt, he linked courage to transformation.

Therefore, Step Seven’s call reflects timeless wisdom. Humility clears space for honesty, while courage transforms weakness into growth. Though hard, these virtues create enduring peace, not shallow comfort.

Tres citas de SFZ

PASO 7
“Humildemente pedimos
a nuestro Poder Superior
que quitara nuestras
defectos de carácter.”

EL DILEMA
“Muchos de nosotros
hemos exclamado,
‘¿Quieres decir que incluso
tengo que decir la verdad
sobre eso?’ o ‘Si tan solo pudiera
seguir mintiendo, robando, o

I think it’s harder to choose honesty instead of comfort because bein’ comfortable makes us content, and even is known to boost the immune system. No one has to be completely comfortable, but some is always good, so someone won’t get too sick. Honesty is great if it’s beneficial, but once it’s too invasive then even honesty can reach danger zones. Yom Kippur starts at sundown, and this is a Judaic shabbat for atonement. In Jewish beliefs gossip is somethin’ that can be really harmful, and if someone is always too honest they could become someone’s target for harmful gossip (spreadin’ someone’s own secret business to erebody). I’ve known gossip to also start causin’ speech impediments, and acute memory loss. Who would want somethin’ like that unless sufferin’ with massochism unfortunately. Very serious to be taken too lightly.

I think honesty vs comfort can be perceived as a false dichotomy depending on the topic. Why make a choice? Why not develop consistent honesty so that it becomes comfort. That’s my hot take for the day.

There are many over the course of my life, the two that seem most relevant are when I chose to go to seek help and go to treatment. It takes a character to admit being wrong, to admit needing help. I am grateful for both times when I realized that the only path forward was going to take character and seek help

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful.

For me that date might have been January 8th. When I went outside my neighbor’s house to the South and my house was on fire, but the house to the north wasn’t yet so my plan was to get the hose and start drenching his home but there was no water so then I went to three other properties and there was still no water at all but instead of panicking I decided to help and I think that built a lot of character… it’s better to confront a situation instead of run from it

I was given the choice between pursuing what I wanted and that which would build my character. I easily chose to pursue what I wanted. In the disaster that followed, I found the opportunity to build my character.

These last few days were really busy preparing for a big event. Everything seemed to have gone thru really really well and I cant think of a single thing that I intended to do that didn’t get done.

It feels as tho my expectations were well in line with what was reasonably possible. I am extremely grateful for the relative peace my HP has provided so I could see things as clearly as possible.
