“If men as individuals surrender to the call of their elementary instincts … the result for them all taken together must be a state of insecurity, of fear, and of promiscuous misery.”  Albert Einstein (1879 – 1955) German-American physicist / philosopher

English Analysis

Today’s Zonr post confronts our instinct to disguise defects. Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions reminds us that gluttony becomes “comfort.” Language masks weakness. William James, in The Varieties of Religious Experience, explored how self-deception delays spiritual change. He believed naming truth awakens transformation. Likewise, procrastination is not harmless; it is sloth extended.

Furthermore, surrender demands layers. It Works: How and Why explains that surrender deepens as we confront character defects. Carl Jung argued that transformation occurs when one faces the shadow directly. This mirrors Step Seven: we admit addiction and also its spiritual scars. Such honesty requires courage greater than initial abstinence.

Albert Einstein, though a physicist, echoed this wisdom. He warned that indulgence in base instincts brings “promiscuous misery.” His insight shows that surrender is not weakness but strength. It prevents society from collapsing under unchecked desires. In recovery, surrender becomes survival.

Wellbriety teachings emphasize this truth: “You cannot heal what you hide.” By exposing defects, people reclaim balance. Hiding prolongs misery. Naming creates hope. Each thinker insists that disguise leads to pain, but surrender births freedom.

Recovery asks us: Will we keep pretending, or surrender to healing?

When have you tried to hide a problem, and how did surrender help you heal?

Gluttony has been causing me the most trouble lately. I mean living in consumerism, wanting *more* of any given thing just for the sake of it. Especially at the expense of my actual material needs. Balance is a skill, not a talent.

Being vulnerable and willing to surrender are keys to change. this starts when we begin to seek a new way of being the healing can begin. Every moment is an opportunity to become vulnerable and start to surrender. Then we attract support and through continued action in this direction the support rallies, including our Higher Power.

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful.

Well it’s impossible for me to hide anything from myself however I think substitution can rear its ugly head when there’s no buffer left. Sugar has always been my go-to. But I talk about it so it’s no secret so I Surrender into the discipline mode now. I know God’s will for me is to stay healthy and beware of other patterns that could be harmful staying healthy will help my spiritual well-being as well as my physical well-being

When i see utter insanity repeat it in my life, I know true surrender is an option, and true surrender to my HP. Right now, I set small goals that have been bein’ successful until I meet those eternal true goals that I want to surrender. Reminiscin’ can cause a lot of pain, and that’s when again I can build more up, and truly surrender. I also can’t wait till those people who like to tempt people are completely not surroundin’ us as well.

Gluttony and sloth are my major downfalls at the moment. I crave stimulation and don’t want to work for it all at the same time. It’s a vicious cycle that isn’t something I like about myself and want to change, but feels like they are dug into the essence of me. How does one even pull these things out? Probably time, effort, and patience. All hard when you’re a gluttonous sloth 😐

For me, procrastination is another word for FEAR. I would rather do nothing than risk failure. As I learn to turn my defects over to the God of my understanding, I am learning to put one timid foot in front of the other. I won’t get there fast, and I know I can get there.

I’ve been working on my impatience by not reacting every time some one or something doesn’t seem to go as I think it should.
