English Analysis

In The Big Book, the writers describe desperation as the “escape of drowning men.” This mirrors Viktor Frankl’s belief that meaning rescues the human spirit (Man’s Search for Meaning, 1946). Both suggest that surrender leads to renewal. False pride, however, blocks the flow of help. When we refuse guidance, we remain submerged in our own ego’s waters. A Higher Power lifts us only when we stop fighting the current.

Similarly, The Basic Text teaches that recovery thrives in shared service. Martin Buber (1958) wrote that “all real living is meeting.” Connection transforms isolation into grace. Through helping another, we find our own breath again. Wellbriety teachings echo this: “Healing is for those who share it” (Coyhis, 2006). Service is not performance—it is transformation.

Barack Obama’s call for a “new spirit of responsibility” bridges these spiritual truths with civic action. He reminds us that recovery, like democracy, demands participation. Real change asks that we “pitch in” and care for one another. From this, community becomes sacred practice.

Therefore, the drowning man becomes a servant, and the servant becomes free. Recovery, service, and humility unite to create what The Big Book calls “a design for living that really works.” Each gesture of compassion becomes an act of spiritual defiance against despair.

Just this week, when talking to some friends about the impact of SNAP due to the Government shutdown. Those cuts really hurt those of us that rely on it. Without asking or expecting, one of my friends sent me the equivalent of monthly SNAP. I was moved to tears and joy because the anxiety and stress that was removed with that one simple gesture was overwhelming. Knowing that I have food provides space to heal and focus on getting out of the current struggles that are in my life.

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful.

I’ve been allowing people to help me since I lost my home in the Eaton Canyon fire. So in return I’ve been volunteering to give back to those whose homes were red tagged and are now finally able to move back in and that has created a big space for gratefulness in my heart it seems like the more I’m able to help people the more healing I get.

When I’ve let someone help me in the past it has been rewardin’ that at least at times when blimpies of evil take over all mind-sets around me there’s still somehow space that is found for someone with enough compassion to come in and provide some type of care, and assistance. The sickness I find in a lot of people, and greedy businesses is astoundin’, because it’s like a lot of them don’t want to really help people, but just collect a lot of government fundin’. Despite those hopeless unfortunates at least I find solace in that I know my karma is good, and my spiritual guides will grow stronger, and even stronger to stop all of them that seek out bad/evil deeds in their tracks before reaching anyone. Then there’s me assisting me(moi) too to reach new heights, like in meditation for instance that has provided so much for me over the years, and even reached new grounds in lessening at least excruciatin’ pain. “Conzentration” (rather good focus) is of a lot of importance for me now, especially while studyin’, and meditatin’. Finding good in some people gets difficult at times due to even my larger size in thinkin’ a lot of people out there must have it still out for me for never lettin’ go of my beauties. Plus these days whoever broke out from somewhere seems to have even more just added to corruptions that already exist.

This “Design for Living” is a blessing indeed. Its reassuring and keeps me thinking what I can do for others so I don’t sit around thinking about what I think I need.

This website is a life-saver. Yes, sometimes a candy, sweet and enjoyable. And sometimes it is the lifeline that keeps me from sinking. Even as I sit here before this computer, I can feel the stress and tension leaving me. As I read the words that speak to me that I am no longer alone; the world is no longer so harsh and cruel; that everything happens exactly as it should…whether I recognize it or not. I am a child of this Universe. I have a right and a purpose to be here.
