Analysis: The Heart of the Message

Step 12 marks a profound transformation of the soul. We carry a message of hope to others. How Al-Anon Works asks us to define this message clearly. Is it words or a way of living? True service requires a deep spiritual awakening. This shift allows us to help others without expectation. We act as vessels for the Great Spirit.

Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions explores the “divine paradox” of giving. We find our reward by helping a fellow sufferer. This selfless act demands nothing in return. Sophocles claimed that love frees us from life’s heavy weight. Mother Teresa believed we must put great love into small acts (Teresa, 1975). Her wisdom echoes the selfless nature of recovery. Furthermore, Wellbriety teachings connect us to the community. “Giving is the highest expression of our potency” (White Bison, 2002, p. 88). We heal our own hearts by lifting others.

The Higher Power works through our hands and voices. We offer our experience to those still suffering. This message is more than a set of rules. It is the vibration of unconditional love in action. Consequently, our service becomes a spiritual practice. We find freedom from the weight of the past. Each small act of kindness brings us closer to peace.

— Sófocles (496 a.C. – 406 a.C.)

Ofrecemos nuestra experiencia a quienes aún sufren.

Whenever I share at meetings or I see newcomers, I try to reach out to them. I recently got 3 years and went to a meeting to get a cake. It’s not for me, it’s so that newcomers can see that the program works.

Calling to check in on newcomers and doing volunteer work have been my most recent expressions of love. Calling family, too, has been important.

I can call my friends and family and check in on them/ offer support in a simple way without expecting them to return the favor. Like hearing out some issues or pain they may be having.

God, if it be thy will, may I help others everyday without need or expectation of reward. It was not always this way. Yet day after day, as the healing continues from where I was, and into a place of patience, faith and action.

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful.

I have been sharing with people my journey, about how I am little by little climbing my way out of the unforgiving hole that I had found myself in. Those that know me have commented on my strength and drive, because they have seen my mess, and they were honestly scared for me. Seeing me getting slowly back on my feet had given a friend hope that he could do the same.

Since I put together today’s USFZ I have my own idea of what the answer would be. nevertheless still feel that the best work I do is work where I keep the spiritual principal in mind. (5 mins.)
