“Don’t let your special character and values, the secret that you know and no one else does, the truth – don’t let that get swallowed up by the great  chewing complacency.”

Analysis: Navigating the Inner Tides

Complacency threatens the delicate balance of recovery. The Big Book labels alcohol a subtle foe. We cannot rest on past success. Doing so invites the return of old shadows. Stagnation stops our spiritual growth. The Basic Text warns that denial returns quickly. Consequently, negative emotions become unbearable burdens.

Carl Jung emphasized the need for constant self-awareness. He argued that unexamined lives lead to destruction (Jung, 1933). This vigilance keeps our inner light burning. Our Higher Power provides the strength to continue. Similarly, the Red Road demands continuous movement. “We must walk the path every single day” (White Bison, 2002, p. 54). Aesop urges us to protect our unique truths. We must never let the “chewing complacency” win.

Esopo (620 – 560 a.C.) Autor / maestro griego

I wish I could afford to be chewed up by complacency at this point. It would be more peaceful. But I do something I can be proud of every day, in order to ‘keep my spirit happy’

I often become complacent when certain needs have been met, especially basic needs that I’ve been fighting for. But then I forget about the true goals that I have. I need to get back on track with my dreams.

As long as I’m in communication with God, through prayer, through meditation sometimes just talking to him as I’m walking along keeps my spirit healthy. And when my spirit is lacking nutrition I can sure feel it

I think that complascency comes in the form of staying at home a bit too much. I used to be quite adventurous in that I would get out of my comfort zone to engage in the world and grow as a person. I’d like to be like that again, but it’s hard to move out of that swallowing complacency

Meditation and prayer are my strongest partners to keep my spirit healthy. Today I am start fresh, new day, new hope, new dawn. While, at times, the noise around can try to bring anyone down, it is important to remember where that noise comes from and who it serves. It does not come from my higher power and it does not serve me.

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful.

By remembering that we all must experience periods of growth, and that difficult times are in no way an indication of defective character. They are however, a reminder that we must be aware and willing to grow.

It’s kind of funny – I do my Steps for a while and feel so very much better that I stop going to meetings, praying and meditating. I feel so much better I feel cured! That’s kind of like taking off my seat belt because it saved me from a crash in the past. I need to continue to wear the seat belt – I need to continue to go to meetings, pray and meditate. I may not do it perfectly and I feel best when I stay “in the Program.” How can I lose sight of my Higher Power when my Higher Power never loses sight of me? Woo Hoo!
