Analysis: The Radiance of Surrender

Step twelve invites a profound transformation. We transition from closed buds to blooming flowers. The Basic Text describes this beautiful growth. We find empathy for others in this new light. This connection requires a deep bond with our Higher Power. We no longer hide in the shadows of isolation. Humility acts as the soil for our recovery.

Trying to control the world leads to deep exhaustion. Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. noted the loneliness of playing Creator. We often seek safety in human hands alone. However, true peace comes from spiritual reliance. Mahatma Gandhi taught that surrender brings the greatest power (Gandhi, 1948). He believed that strength flows from this humble act (Gandhi, 1948). We release the burden of managing the universe. Consequently, we find inner strength and lasting quietude.

The Red Road to Wellbriety echoes this ancient wisdom. “The Creator’s love shines like the sun on everyone” (White Bison, 2002, p. 64). We must simply choose to stand in the light. This openness allows us to serve our community. Our spirits bloom when we stop forcing solutions. We witness the beauty of a life led by grace.

In a strange way, I ‘play god’ as a writer in that I try to orchestrate the characters in my stories in a way that’s almost micromanaging. And when I’ve done my best work is when I’ve let go and allowed the story to flow organically, allowing characters to spring to life on the page and make decisions I hadn’t planned for them. I think there’s something special to that.

To me, letting go and trusting in my higher power is not synonymous with doing nothing. I look for direction on what the next right action might be- only sometimes is it nothing.

Let go and let God. What a relief. My life has become less intense more so than not in recent months as I have let go and let God. There is an unmistakable peace that I feel when the need to control everything is reduced. I’m not perfect, I am a work in progress, yet there is progress and that gives me peace.

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful.

I replace the urge to control with a let go and let God mind set… handing every burden over to him… I replace my fear with his promises. The only real truth in this world that I can rely on!
    This creates happiness…

When I let go and trust my Higher Power, it lifts the incredible weight of needing to control every aspect of my life. I am capable of great things, but I am only human, and I can only go so far without trusting that my Higher Power can help me navigate the more difficult times. So, when I let go of control, I’m able to live a much happier and freer life.

You can plan all you want but God will laugh at it. You don’t have the power God has the power. You have to surrender. I find it hard to surrender sometimes. I need to pray more

In some ways this has been the story of my life…the “GREAT RESCUER” the only problem is that sometimes I need to be rescued….or at least allow myself to be helped/served by others. Someone reminded me of that yesterday, and it was very humbling….thanks. (5)

While I am usually very busy second-guessing other people (and thereby avoiding looking at my own pain) I forget to be “in spirit,” or to view others not as their own appearance. I am learning that a faithful representation of my own Higher Power is acknowledging your Higher Power, and stepping towards you in a state of love. I have to do this consciously for it is not second nature – it’s my old behavior striking a stance of fear and pain. I am learning to see you – really, just see you.

I think I’ve been pretty good at delegating responsibility at my spiritual group. In fact, when a minor crisis happened I did not intervene or offer unsolicited advice.

Playing at being someone else’s Higher Power is a draining and dangerous pass time. For me, there is no way I can surrender to my Higher Power and try to run the lives of others. I can take your inventory in about five seconds flat. My own inventory? A lot longer. I am in awe of the creativity that enters my life – my decisions, my path, when I get the hell out of the way and let my Higher Power rock!
