“Be not the slave of your own past. Plunge into the sublime seas, dive deep and swim far, so you shall come back with self-respect, with new power, with an advanced experience that shall explain and overlook the old.”

– Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 – 1882), U.S. author / poet

Analysis: Breaking the Chains

Addiction traps the spirit. Life with Hope identifies this mental prison. Guilt condemns the user to misery. We lose all hope for freedom. Cycles of failure deepen our despair. We suffer alone in the dark.

Surrender offers a new way forward. The Third Step prayer marks our turning point. We offer our lives to a Higher Power. This act breaks the heavy bondage of self. We learn to trust a new vision. Our true will emerges through this release.

Ralph Waldo Emerson urges us to leave the past. He encourages a deep dive into the sublime seas. We emerge from the water with renewed power. Wellbriety traditions support this sacred transition. “The Creator frees us from the weight of our history” (White Bison, 2002, p. 134). Nelson Mandela championed this same liberation (Mandela, 1994). He proved that the mind can rise above any cage. We choose to build a life of purpose today. Each step forward honors our journey to light.

(Life with Hope, p. 162)

Life with Hope identifica esta prisión mental.

I am currently, as my sponsor puts it, parked on step 9 making one amends a day until the list on step 8 is complete… I’m using these tools and my higher power to break free from the past… the fourth step was also key in breaking the chains…

I am learning to give up unhealthy parts of my past every day.

For me, it’s a repeated conscious decision to stop rumination and perseveration. To substitute a tic with a positive habit as much as possible.

What it means for me not to be a prisoner of my past, is to not hold shame for my regrets. In fact, to not dwell on regrets at all. In recovery I have come to recognize that life is a series of events that are as intended.

I think my HP, Creator or Great Spirit is trying to evolve by opening my doors into where I want to get too, and sometimes constant good reflections of protection, and my reality keeps me safe, and constant reflection on where I’m at, or wanting to get to.

“There is more than one sort of prison, Captain. I sense that you carry yours wherever you go.” This line is spoken by Chirrut Îmwe to Cassian Andor in Rouge One.

A profound statement that sometimes we keep ourselves prisoners of our past, or perception, grief, etc. Certainly I have been a prisoner to many of those, including the disease of my addiction. Any time I diminish my potential and allow my ego to imprison me with limitations, my higher power shines light through miraculous ways and sends the potential to change and set myself free.

Thank you for allowing me to participate and share on my path of healing.

My higher power is eternally changeless. He is the same yesterday today and forever and that helps secure my Foundation with him so it’s me evolving and aspiring to be more like him…

For me, its expanded to have a few components, including something innate like a soul, a sense of animism, and a sort of polytheistic thing based on the ideas of egregores. I also lean into a lot of traditional ideas, and have tried in my life to actively connect to certain deities or find inspiration from them.

I just know that for me to avoid getting mired down in my past I continually look forward, work on my faults, and just try to forgive myself for my past. It is a continual effort that I have to do every day.
