but that was just a lie.
Outside I may seem calm,
But inside I do cry.”

Analysis: Changing the Lens

Recovery demands more than mere abstinence. It Works: How and Why explains this deeper truth. We must alter our perspective. Our disease impacts every part of life. A Higher Power helps us heal. This process transforms our inner world.

Reflection reveals our hidden patterns. Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions exposes our erratic emotions. We easily judge others. However, we struggle to see ourselves. Self-awareness takes significant time. Patience supports this journey toward clarity.

Ansel Adams championed the value of individual perception. He believed everyone should reveal their creative spirit. This idea mirrors Wellbriety wisdom. “We see the world as we are, not as it is” (White Bison, 2002, p. 98). Viktor Frankl also emphasized this shift in mindset (Frankl, 1946). We choose our own attitude. We build confidence through honest expression. Our creative spirits bloom in safety.

Just accepting that I don’t have to figure literally anything out helped me a lot. I don’t like the idea of praying to an intelligent presence that I don’t believe exists, and that’s fine. I don’t have to find an alternative right now, just be willing to pray. That looks different for everyone, and thats okay too. Often I just hope for or thank people out loud, to myself. I genuinely don’t feel anything is listening. I don’t feel anything or one needs to hear it but myself. The words just sound good to me.

At times I feel really strong and committed to the idea of life as a spiritual journey, and other times I feel like I am pushing against the grain of my own lack of faith. I want to get back to the deeply felt notion that life is intrinsically spiritual

The change is using what I know, using my faith as a cornerstone in my recovery. And that has changed everything. Instead of ignoring faith, I now embrace and rely on my spiritual life for strength and perseverance.

The only thing that has not changed in my spiritual journey is my belief in God.

Recognizing that feelings aren’t facts has helped me more quickly recognize my faulty thinking. The last couple days I was in a pissy mood. I was choosing to be in a pissy mood as a result of me not getting something I wanted. The fact I didn’t get what I wanted is a fact, but that negative feeling is not a fact and I don’t have to hold on to it.

Thank you Betty Ford for having courage and being a trail blazer. The video made me cry and cry – the force of nature and waterfall like did some inner purging; and the clear blue sky to show everything will be okay. Great to know I am not responsible for making sure the world spins around – this video really put my HP back in charge. Thank you SFZ.

I’m somewhat partial to the Boy George video. He’s his own creation and a trailblazer in his own rite. I have to think that Boy and Betty would have been fast friends if they met.
