Analysis: The Paradox of Giving

Sobriety thrives on a strange paradox. Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions reveals this deep truth. We keep this precious gift only by giving it away. Generosity fuels our ongoing recovery journey. Selfish hoarding destroys our inner peace.

Sharing our story protects us from relapse. The Basic Text emphasizes carrying the message forward. Helping suffering newcomers anchors our own spirit. Muhammad Ali viewed service as essential rent for earthly life. Every helpful act builds a stronger community.

Wellbriety teachings echo this vital wisdom. “We heal ourselves by lifting others up” (White Bison, 2002, p. 134). Mahatma Gandhi championed this same selfless path (Gandhi, 1948). He believed that finding oneself requires losing oneself in service. A Higher Power works through our open hands. Giving freely transforms our daily existence.

(12 y 12, p. 151)

Being of service fills a basic human need that I have to help others. It brings a joy no other activity does.

I’m giving when I donate some of my time to volunteer, hosting meetings, and participating at meetings with sharing also, I donate some cash, not a lot but some to non-profits, and people on the street safely at times too. Sometimes I do check if I have the ability to give of me, or do I need to kind of wait till later, because I have nothing to give at certain times.

Giving it away is how we keep getting. It is not limited to any one aspect. It can be a conversation, a kind word, doing something for someone else, cleaning up, doing a task. Be creative and find ways to be a part of, contribute and give without expectation.

A wise man I was interviewing once said, the greatest gift we have is the ability to contribute. I carry that wisdom with me every day.

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful.

One way to give it away is to find a newcomer and tell them your story… I led a meeting last week and shared a short version of my story. It’s important to qualify first so that people can identify with you. The best way I think to give it away is to sponsor somebody. You go out of your way to pick them up take them to a meeting take them to get something to eat and take them home. All the while showing them that it is possible to have a great time clean and sober then eventually they will do the same to someone else

I only isolate when I’m watching movies or TV, everything else is up for grabs…
