“An attitude of humility is not the same as humiliation, nor is it a denial of our good qualities.  On the contrary, an attitude of humility means that we have a realistic view of ourselves and our place in the world.” (It Works, How & Why, p. 49)

Analysis

True self-acceptance opens the door to personal transformation. We release self-judgment and honor our real place in the world.

Humility requires a grounded view of our character. It rejects harsh shame and brutal self-punishment. Step Seven invites us to ask a Higher Power for true healing. We seek freedom from flaws that limit our inner growth.

C.S. Lewis captured this spirit of quiet grace. He observed, “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less” (Lewis, 1952, p. 128). This shift allows us to focus on others. We learn continuously without diminishing our worth.

The Wellbriety movement expands this sacred understanding. White Bison teaches, “Humility is an attitude that will help us start fresh in everything we do” (2002, p. 112). It invites us to cultivate a beginner’s mind every day. We step onto a path of ongoing spiritual renewal.

We hold our heads high through honest self-awareness. Asking for help reveals genuine strength of spirit.

— How Al-Anon Works (pág. 56)

— It Works, How & Why (pág. 49)

Today I am able to admit when I don’t know something and ask for help. In the past I was an expert at bluffing my way through things, to hide when I didn’t know. I thought I was an expert at least, and often people could see through me and I just looked foolish. Today I understand that wisdom is accepting what I don’t know and trying to learn more.

I’m more humble in wanting to get other people, and accepting them in a more peaceful/zen attitude. Buddhism prinicples have been teaching me more in creating that caring modest/getting others in a humble manner way. I’m grateful for everyone I meet, and more so the ones who’ve been assistive, and peaceful/zenful in mannerisms too. My wants are to get along with everyone, and when I’m humble with others, and in life that’s definitely created.

I’ve been learning how unhelpful & useless arguing often is. It doesn’t convince whoever I’m talking to, and it rarely makes friends. Unless someone is explicitly talking to debate argument is unwanted. Sometimes it’s warranted, but that’s truly rare. Choosing to refrain from arguing even when I’m sure I’m empirically or philosophically right has been a very helpful expression of humility. It brings both pride and peace.

Humility is so important. I sometimes let my ego take over, and I end up behaving in a way I regret. It’s also important not to humiliate myself or downplay my abilities. They say humility is having an accurate view of yourself.

I think when I awake to another new beamin’ day of light, and take that first breath of I hope fresh breath, automatically a humble spirit is with me(moi). Arrogance is somethin’ I never had before, so it’s not somethin’ I ever could relate to, unless someone has tried to falsify my name. Bein’ peace/zen is a cultural awakenin’ to me where no matter the attitudes that some of us do make mistakes, if not all, that findin’ positivity through people’s judgements don’t matter. I can still keep a humble attitude while of course always standin’ my ground.

I really felt like somehow I was very smart, or smarter than other people around me a while back and have been getting very humbled with school, as I’ve been having trouble learning. Coming back to the basis of learning is to struggle and overcome the state of not knowing.

If living in a congregate setting doesn’t keep one humble I don’t know what will. There are many things i can do throughout the day to practice humility, simple things, opening the door for someone, doing something good for someone and not expecting anything in return…

Knowin’ why we’re here too makes bein’ in a communal settin’ with people a lot easier as well I find, and gives me strength to stay away from lifestyles that aren’t where I any longer want to be.

Mindfulness is one of those tools that, when I practice it, the life changing benefits gained are transcendent. Slowing down the scatter around me reduces the anxiety replaces arrogance with calm. That feeling, for me connects confidence with humility. Like peace, humility is ever present. It is not something that comes and goes, rather when do I be it, not wish it.

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful.

Humility vs humiliation – sometimes there is a blurry line especially when I accept that I have character defects. The acceptance I can practice around humility also allows me to own the many gifts and talents I have been given. I am learning to look for my own beauty, my own artistry, my own capacity to live my life as an artist creating a masterpiece (thank you, Don Miguel Ruiz). My life is my masterpiece and it is painted with both dark colors and light.
