The Journey to Rejoin the Human Race – Step 12

Solitary person standing on mountain top staring into an endless horizon w/ sfz title

“The sons of Adam are limbs of each other. Having been created of one essence.   When the calamity of time affects one limb, the other limbs cannot remain at rest. If thou hast no sympathy for the troubles of others, thou art unworthy to be called by the name of man [or woman].” – Sa’di Shirazi (1184 – 1283/1291) Persian poet (on being human)

Analysis: The Sacred Circle of Recovery

Healing begins with the courageous act of making amends. It Works: How and Why links this process to spiritual growth. We learn to value the feelings of our neighbors. Humility blossoms through these honest interactions with others. This journey allows us to rejoin the collective human family. We find a new place within the world.

Love transforms our perspective on every living soul. The Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions promises a profound spiritual awakening. We clear the wreckage of our difficult past. Sa’di Shirazi reminds us that all humans share one essence. Thich Nhat Hanh calls this beautiful concept “interbeing” (Hanh, 1987, p. 12). If one person suffers, the whole body feels pain. We must cultivate deep sympathy for all living things.

Furthermore, true peace emerges from this radical empathy. The Great Spirit guides us toward harmony and balance. The Red Road to Wellbriety emphasizes the importance of community. “We are all connected in the Great Circle” (White Bison, 2002, p. 24). Our actions ripple through the lives of everyone we meet. Service to others anchors our own lasting recovery. We move from isolation into a life of shared meaning.

In my Peer Support training, I often find myself thinking about other trainees in a judgmental way. It’s a good chance to adjust my outlook and attitude before going into the field and working with more vulnerable people who cannot afford to deal with my judgement.

I can show empathy by listening and sharing in other people’s pain… giving them support instead of judgment. Sometimes just being an ear to someone is better than trying to solve their problems.

Empathy is the ability to understand, share and resonate with the emotions of another. When I feel the bond of empathy it connects me to a world far larger and greater than me alone. I love to feel that connection with another, it is natural and enlightening.

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful.

How does being kind to others make me feel better about me(moi).
Being kind to others makes me feel better by bringing me good karma (what you do or give out is what you get in return). True I have to put my foot down when need be, but being kind, and I am very caring pays off, so much in the end. Right now sometimes I may ask me(moi), a question like why am I not getting the results I need from being kind. Sometimes patience is needed though to see the results manifest of our good karma to come our way.

for me, empathy and humility go hand in hand.the more that I am able to feel the pain of others the more I feel connected with my own humanity. and that helps merespond to others with a sense that we are all equal and share the same pain.

Good morning everyone + Happy Wednesday. Here is today’s thought. Sometimes we may feel separate, we may feel alone. But, we never are alone. We have each other + in each other, we are one. So today, let’s go forward to a new day. hold the hand of another, + rejoice in the Spirit of Love. Blessings. BB

JB jr. is back … wooohooo.

I’m having internet connection issues. Again. So I’m doing this from a library. These excursions to public internet points of access are times when I can, if I choose to interact with those I’d probably not meet in my every day travels. Outside of meetings, of course.

Just a quick note: I miss JB and Easy.

The balance for me – because I have boundary problems in relationships with others – is to be aware of others and be as supportive as possible without crossing the line into “taking care of” them. As Melody Beatie said, “I cannot simultaneously set boundaries and take care of the feelings of others.” I pray that today I will be kind – to myself and to others.
