“But we need not fear that we can lose anything by the progress of the soul. The soul may be trusted to the end.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 – 1882) U.S. Poet, Transcendentalist and lecturer on the unknown

Analysis: The Sanctuary of the Familiar

Humans often cling to old wounds. The Basic Text calls this a “distorted security.” We fear the unknown more than our current agony. This behavior often stems from a sense of false pride. We think we can manage the chaos alone. However, this isolation only breeds deeper resentment and fear.

As Bill Sees It suggests a two-part solution for fear. First, we seek as much freedom as possible. Next, we find the grace to face remaining terrors. Maya Angelou noted that “courage is the most important of all the virtues” (Angelou, 1993, p. 11). Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtue consistently. This bravery opens the door to a Higher Power. We move from static pain into dynamic growth.

Wellbriety teachings echo the need for spiritual surrender. “The Great Spirit is always with us” (White Bison, 2002, p. 55). We trust the progress of our own souls. Emerson reminds us that the soul thrives through growth. Grace carries us across the gauntlet of the unknown.

For me, a huge fear is rejection. I really struggle with it in regards to making new friends or potential partners. It really holds me back from creating a missing component of a fulfilling life I think.

Alot of us hold on to our fears, doubt, self-loathing or hatred because there is a certain distorted Security in familiar pain, it seems safer to embrace what we know than to let go of it for the unknown

I’ve embraced the unknown by trusting the process of recovery. Currently I struggle financially but I know that as long as I am able to stay sober, something will happen that will open up opportunities for me to become more financially independent

I embrace the unknown with faith and serenity. Surrendering the need to control. In doing so I enjoy peace of mind that the need to know everything is released.

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful.

Embracing the unknown takes courage and vulnerability. Two words that might not seem connected, yet live side by side in strength. Every day is unknown, yet I have faith that life is as it should be and how can I fear the gift of today. The unknown is why I want to be here right now, as I am curious and want to learn more. The unknown is the promise that a higher power as I understand it to be will never ask me to go beyond that which I am capable of doing.

Good morning everyone + Happy Monday. I have been thinking about miracles lately. Not so much of the miracles that have been bestowed on me, + there have been many, but the miracles I have seen bestowed on others. It is very incredible to witness a change that happens when a drunkard is transformed into a sober person who is filled with new life, new hope, + new dreams. Welcome God into your life. He is here to transform you, to guide you, to empower you. Blessings. BB

I had to have a difficult conversation today and prayed for guidance. I think things went well, which is a blessing.

I am afraid to contact my friends on the weekend and evenings. I am afraid that they will be judgmental, rejecting or condemning. They have never been so in the past; in fact they have been loving and forgiving. Today I will reach out to a friend even though I am afraid.
