The Trick to ‘Fixing Me, Not You’ – Step 10

A BIT COUNTER-INTUITIVE –

“It is a spiritual axiom
that every time we are
disturbed, no matter what
the cause, there is something
wrong with us. If somebody
hurts us and we are sore,
we are in the wrong
also.” (12 & 12,
p. 90)

BUT THIS IS HOW IT WORKS –

“This step is a
great tool for avoid-
ing grief before we bring
it on ourselves. We monitor
our feelings, emotions, fan-
tasies and actions. By con-
stantly looking at ourselves,
we are able to avoid repea-
ting the actions that
make us feel bad.”
(The Basic Text,
p. 43)

“When there
is no enemy with-
in, the enemies out-
side cannot hurt you.”

– African Proverb

Fix You – Cold Play (4:55)

How have you endeavored to “fix yourself” lately?

The Lazy Birds :

Once, two birds named Rinki and Minki lived in a nest. Both of them were very lazy. They always found excuses for not doing any work.

Once, on a cold winter day, a chilly breeze was blowing. There was some snowfall too. By chance, a hole was made in their nest. The cold breeze blew in through the hole and chilled the nest. Both the birds started feeling cold. Minki thought, “I wonder why Rinki is so lazy? Why is she not repairing the hole?”

On-the other hand, Rinki thought that Minki would fill the hole. Both of them were depending on each other and no one mended the hole.

Soon snow started to fall and the chill nearly froze the insides of their warm nest. The snow flakes entered the nest through the hole. The lazy birds started shivering with cold, but no one was active enough to work.

In the morning both the birds were dead in their nest. They had shivered to death but due to laziness they had not got up to mend the hole.  (http://www.english-for-students.com/The-Lazy-Birds.html)

FEATURED POST FROM THE ZONR VAULT – “fixing self? hmm well doing a 10th step is a good start
not taking someone elses inventory doing what i dont want to do .. sometimes can be like going thru fire. I need to trust more the people god places in my path” (Orig. post 1/4/2012)

I agree. Letting other people in to help us see ourselves better can be scary but ultimately its very rewarding as well.

I love this African proverb. If I try, little by little, to fix me, then whatever other’s may think of me I can honestly feel I’m being the best me I can be. Because I would have made peace with faults and am on the road to healing.

I don’t want to always look at myself. What is pefection? 15%growth is goal

  5. Bohdi Baba

I’m meditating more regularly and doing my best not to jump to conclusions but rather hear everyone out fairly and dispassionately, as much as possible.

Everything I do is in service to “fix” myself, however I have now learned that the key to fixing myself is not making myself so available to others.
