An End to Loneliness, Thanks to the Bonding that Links Us in Recovery – Step 12

“The most terrible poverty is loneliness and the feeling of being unloved.”

– Mother Teresa (1910 – 1997) Macedonian Missionary & Saint

Today’s SFZ

“YET THERE ARE LIMITS TO WHAT WE CAN DO” – “Yet there are limits to what we can do to help another addict.” “We cannot magically remove someone’s loneliness or pain.”  “We can only carry the message; we cannot determine who will receive it.” (12 & 12, p. 52)

How has carrying the message been a reprieve from loneliness in your life, lately?

Ode on Solitude

by Alexander Pope (age 12)

Happy the man, whose wish and care
A few paternal acres bound,
Content to breathe his native air,
In his own ground.

Whose herds with milk, whose fields with bread,
[W]hose flocks supply him with attire,
Whose trees in summer yield him shade,
In winter fire.

Blest, who can unconcernedly find
Hours, days, and years slide soft away,
In health of body, peace of mind,
Quiet by day,

Sound sleep by night; study and ease,
Together mixed; sweet recreation;
And innocence, which most does please,
With meditation.

Thus let me live, unseen, unknown;

Thus unlamented let me die;

Steal from the world, and not a stone

Tell where I lie.

    Being able to work with people at different levels has helped me in the lonely aspects of life. Much more is the being of service.

    I just have to say, Micheal Jackson sounds so angelic in this song. I really really feel like he means it.

    Ah, the challenge of letting other people into my life. Interesting that in addiction we are in diseases of relationship and that only creating relationships helps us heal. How do I trust my Higher Power? And if I cannot trust my Higher Power, it is certainly one off to trust other human beings. And yet I must if I am to recover. I am learning to pray not for deliverance but for guidance and openness. Abandon yourself to your Higher Power…
