Analysis: The Weight of Secrets

Buried secrets poison the human spirit. The Basic Text exposes our hidden internal chaos. We share our crazy thoughts with trusted souls. Confession brings sweet relief to heavy minds. A Higher Power listens through every spoken word. This vulnerability shatters our deepest shame.

True forgiveness transforms our wounded hearts. Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions promises ultimate inner renewal. We begin to feel worthy of grace. Jean-Paul celebrated this beautiful act of mercy. He noted humanity shines brightest during forgiveness. Wellbriety teachings echo this healing truth. “We heal when we release our buried past” (White Bison, 2002, p. 134). Nelson Mandela also championed this freeing path (Mandela, 1994). He understood resentment only imprisons the holder. Letting go opens the door to lasting peace.

To the first question- it depends on the nature of the secret, and who I might be harming by holding it. If it’s something that only hurts me to keep to myself (as best I can tell) I disclose to my sponsor or therapist, depending on its nature. Frankly, I disclose all of my shit to them anyway. If, based on our best judgement, it does some good to tell others- friends, fellows, an effected party, authorities- then I’ll disclose to them too

Unburdening my secrets is putting down the rock freeing my own inner prisoner.

Working a proper fourth step with my sponsor was key in that area… building Trust, and evacuating all of the baggage…

I share with people who are the most genuine with me, who seem to be living the most authentic lives. I feel that I can better trust people who know who they are.

This one is difficult. I’ve got some hardcore mental health history that’s hard to talk about because to a lot of people it’s a big red flag. I try to wait long enough that I’ve gotten to know the person so that they can see many sides of me before mentioning it. Or, if the other person has been through similar experiences I will feel more comfortable talking about it. I think it’s a matter of understanding how much the other person stigmatizes mental health in general

Sometimes it’s the inconsequentialness. If the person has little or no ability to harm my life, it’s easy to share. Sometimes it’s the relationship. I trust my sponsor to do exactly what they say they’ll do, and that what I share won’t somehow make them drink.

The fifth step breaks down the isolation and secrecy that fuels addiction. And the big book States it doesn’t have to be a sponsor but it has to be somebody another human being some people use the clergyman I know somebody who used a complete stranger for this step. But this person got it out and that’s the main thing
