Analysis: The Sanctuary of Belonging

Vulnerability builds true connection. Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions notes that candor creates belonging. We share our deepest conflicts with another soul. Listening to similar struggles heals our heavy hearts. This mutual honesty dissolves our isolation.

Acceptance transforms our inner world. It Works: How and Why describes unconditional love during this vulnerable act. We look up and see profound compassion. That sacred moment anchors us within the program. A Higher Power weaves these bonds of grace.

Frank Herbert observed that humans thrive when they know their place. Destruction follows the loss of this vital connection. Wellbriety traditions echo this essential truth. “We heal when we share our stories in a circle” (White Bison, 2002, p. 81). Brené Brown similarly emphasized that true belonging requires authentic vulnerability (Brown, 2010). We find our home only when we reveal our true selves. Courage opens the door to lasting community.

The world is a temporary home for me… standing up for my higher power sometimes leads to rejection, discomfort and opposition.
During my short residential stay I must care for the Earth, and help other people with love and grace.

People feel stronger when they share their struggles and are met with love because they are understood. If no one were to try to understand them, it would be difficult to feel strength.

The Main Place, the number one place I feel loved is from God I feel God’s love even in the midst of turmoil and chaos. It’s not too many places in this world today that I Feel Love. But that’s okay the program teaches me to accept the things that I cannot change so I cannot change people places and things that are chaotic and full of hate instead my job in this world is to spread just a little joy into at least someone’s day everyday

I feel like I belong when I’m in a Buddhist temple, when I’m at my Tuesday night meeting, out in nature away from people, and anywhere when I’m with friends.

I have moments in the courtroom during a pre-trial appearance or during a trial where everything just clicks and I know that is where I belong and I am doing what I was meant to be doing. When in this groove, my responses and arguments flow forth effortlessly and I am highly effective. Most of the time I go to court, particularly when I am best prepared, this is my experience. I have also had experiences when I feel like I can’t say anything right and I just hope my client or the judge does not figure out that I have no idea what I am doing or that I am a fraud.

I felt accepted in the fellowship the first moment I walked in; I felt kinship when I found a Sponsor crazier than myself; I felt heard when I finally got a sponsor; and I felt loved when I learned she would calmly listen to everything I shared with her and that she would listen without judgment or condemnation.
