“How shall our unconscious – from which so many of our fears, compulsions and phony aspirations still stream – be brought into line with what we actually believe, know and want!  How to convince our dumb, raging and hidden ‘Mr. Hyde’ becomes our main task.” (The Best of Bill pp. 42-43)

Analysis: Taming the Inner Shadow

We carry a shadow within us. The Best of Bill names this force Mr. Hyde. This “raging” part drives our secret fears and compulsions. We must align this hidden self with our conscious values. Jung (1951) claimed the unconscious directs life until we face it. This internal conflict often creates a spiritual fog.

The Red Road to Wellbriety offers a path toward internal peace. “We must face the truth about ourselves” (White Bison, 2002, p. 64). A Higher Power heals this deep psychic divide. It Works: How and Why promises a shift toward spiritual awareness. We stop reacting to fear in destructive ways. Hazlitt (1830) observed that the greatest power operates unseen. This shift turns a hopeless addict into a person eager for life.

CÓMO VIVIR EN ARMONÍA CON NUESTRO PROPIO MR. HYDE INTERIOR – PASO 2

Cómo convencer a nuestro ‘Mr.

The Best of Bill llama a esta fuerza Mr. Hyde.

The Red Road to Wellbriety ofrece un camino hacia la paz interna. It Works: How and Why promete un cambio hacia la conciencia espiritual.

When things are out of alignment, when I get upset, when I am experiencing inner turmoil the key for me is this… I do not let it Define me… I work through it with my loving and caring higher power…

When I was heavy in my addiction, my mom would refer to me as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. While it is one of my favorite musicals, it really hurt to be referred to as such by my own mother. My Mr. Hyde is still there at times in little irritations, and unprocessed resentments, but I find it best to journal his thoughts out, so that they don’t seep out onto an unwitting person.

Yes, I have a “mean” side. Depending on who makes me angry I can turn into a racist, a homophobe, a sexist, etc. it’s something I’m always working on and it never affects my behavior, but when I’m angry at you, whatever makes you different is something I want to weaponize. But before I act on those feelings, they usually pass and are just fleeting thoughts.

I feel it all, yet with prayer and my higher power, I work to only respond with positive feelings. It is not always easy. Mindfulness helps to be aware of what I am feeling at any time, honesty is the other anchor.

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful.

I definitely do have a mean side. I think most people do to some extent. When I got sober, a big thing was learning to manage that side and increase self awareness, because when I was using I was very mean almost all the time.

Having Grace with myself is so important. Allowing space for non-perfection, for making mistakes, but choosing every single day to try again with the strength of my higher power.

There are two wolves, which one I feed determines which one has control. It is no wonder that so many cautionary tales around the globe deal with this basic battle, the eternal tug of war between good and evil that rages within. The notion of Internal Disarmament is the story of stopping our own war, and in doing so, realizing that we are capable of change. With the humility of acknowledging each persons own higher self, higher power, we can tame the beast inside. This is part of the step work, part of the work of being human.

I haven’t had to deal with him as he hasn’t been as active since I stopped drinking. For me to stay sober over the long term, I need some thrill to satisfy Mr. Hyde. I need to scare the hell out of myself once in a while to remind myself I am alive. I need to take some semi “safe” thrills like skydiving or car racing on a track. Safe as opposed to driving home drunk from the bar or getting twisted and ending up in an orgy with 10 people.
