The Reasons Why We Constantly Seek Pleasures (9:39)

Garden of Self-Realization in LA Meditation (8:41)

Analysis: Escaping the Baited Hook

Addiction promises a fleeting paradise. The Basic Text reveals the harsh reality. Euphoria quickly fades into dark despair. High peaks lead to deep, painful valleys. We face a stark, difficult choice. Withdrawal hurts, yet addiction kills our spirit.

Old memories haunt our final days. The Big Book captures this cycle of failure. We chase ghosts of past moments. Every attempt ends in another heartbreak. These hollow pleasures disguise a hidden hook. Thomas Jefferson warns us against such deception. Blindly biting the bait brings only sorrow.

A Higher Power guides us toward clarity. We must break the chains of illusion. Wellbriety teachings offer a path of healing. “We must turn from shadows to seek the light” (White Bison, 2002, p. 88). Buddha also taught that desire breeds suffering (Buddha, 1959). Mindfulness helps us recognize the dangerous lure. We choose life over the trap of craving. Each small step builds lasting, true freedom.

I’ve had to be careful about indulging in sugars, particularly chocolate lately. Being an alcoholic, I was constantly pumping sugar into my body, so I crave it quite a bit. Now I have to think twice about these seemingly innocuous purchases, so that I do not form a new bad habit.

When I am living in ego/pride my wants are impulsive and blind to consequences. When I aspire to live in my Higher Powers will, those impulses are no longer dominant in behaviors.

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful.

I appreciate the line, mindfulness helps us recognize the dangerous lure. Renewing the mind will help me to think twice before indulging in whatever Temptation is trying to take me down…

Yes, pleasurable time can seduce us in it’s eventual maleficent behaviors, and feelings. There’s always something to gain from each experience though, and something to learn along the way, that can make us stronger to guard us from all of these pleasurable temptations that are misery in disguise.

Our brains are easily hijacked. Dopamine is essential for survival- but we live in a way full of dopamine shortcuts. Rich foods, substances, sex. These things can be incredibly helpful- think of nutrition, pain relief & socialization, connection & authenticity.
These things can also be addictions. Obsession & compulsion, isolation, losing physical/mental/emotional health.

I keep pleasure at arms length right now, my recovery is to important. However, that does not mean I don’t have fun or indulge in deep belly laughter. The things that I might find rooted in pleasure are today, to closely rooted in the temptations associated with my recovery.

For me if I have to think twice about something it might be too late. If I talk myself into visiting people who still party for example that’s asking for trouble. I don’t need to think twice about that… that’s a one-time thought… so if I have to think twice about something that’s my conscience giving me a warning.

I keep going to AA meetings thinking I’m going to actually enjoy them. The best I can hope for is I don’t hate it. I have to keep reminding myself that may come with time but I just have to show up and do the work. I have to admit even a boring night at the bar was more fun than an AA meeting. I guess I just don’t have enough time in the program. I keep holding on to the thread of hope that it will get better. Going out drinking, it was going to remain the same at best and likely only get worse.

I just bought a ton of cookies and a cake. I’m trying to space out how much I eat but this is one of the reasons why I don’t keep sweets such as these in the house. Already I can tell the ab work I’ve been doing is fading right before my eyes.

All pleasure does not result in pain – some pleasure is short-term (addictive behaviors) and some pleasure can contribute to our decision to choose gratitude and joy (changing my beliefs to reflect the god in me). It is easier for me to choose harmful self-soothing than choosing to do a contrary action. Today, I will work on loving myself; that feels scary at first, as contrary behavior often does. Today I choose my Higher Power over my lower power.
