Analysis: The Power of Surrender

Life often tests our inner resolve. It Works: How and Why admits that struggles continue even in recovery. Problems pile up quickly. We feel powerless when resources dwindle. Fear clouds our judgment. A Higher Power offers a steady hand during these dark times.

Surrender marks the start of healing. One Day at a Time suggests emptying the mind of fear. We stop fighting alone. Reliance on a divine source simplifies our path. Abraham Lincoln found strength in this profound realization. He sought wisdom beyond his own capabilities. His humility serves as a model for all leaders.

Wellbriety teachings reinforce this connection. “We find peace when we let go of control” (White Bison, 2002, p. 45). Viktor Frankl also emphasized the importance of finding meaning through surrender (Frankl, 1946). He believed suffering disappears when we serve a greater purpose. True strength emerges from our vulnerability. We breathe deeper when we release the need to manage everything. This shift changes our perspective entirely. Serenity arrives as we accept our limits.

Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865)

For me In that situation the only thing that could fix an unmanageable circumstance is God… and I thank him for giving me things to practice through AA and through the spirit… I’ve hit my knees many a Time and trusting his sovereignty to get me through another day…

Before I got sober, I was so out of control that I was literally on my knees praying in front of the toilet for the sickness to stop, every single morning. Every morning, as soon as my feet hit the floor, I would have to run to the bathroom. I prayed for the cycle to stop.

Expressing a need for help, after talking actions, is a sure way to rally support. The help includes friends, family and my Higher Power.

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful.

Togetherness, and remember each other when struggles are immense are definitely key to keeping on a good path I feel, away from those things that may harm us. There will be defeats, or so we may think, but where in unity one is victorious, so we all can be victorious in the same way.

Dealing with the grief of family members going through illness. These are moments when I need the support and understanding of my higher power. Also, when stress from external challenges, like dealing with school bureaucracy, places me in a state of unregulated emotions, I ask for calm in the face of the storm. My higher power guides me to a safe harbor where I can find peace.

The last time I got down on my knees to pray was on January 8th on the day of the fires. In the wake of that terrible tragedy, it brought the community of Altadena closer. I’ve met some neighbors I’ve never knew and we’re all getting through this together we are definitely United and not divided.
