Analysis: Beyond the Lonely Throne

The universe stretches wide and deep. Humans often imagine they sit at its center. Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions challenges this grand illusion. We see ourselves as the pinnacle of life. This mindset creates a false sense of control. However, addiction shatters this lonely throne. True recovery begins with a quiet surrender.

Bernard Bailey notes the shock of losing this status. We eventually learn we are not the universe’s core. Albert Einstein described this as a “cosmic religious feeling” (Einstein, 1954, p. 38). He believed we must transcend our personal desires. This shift allows us to see the bigger picture. We find peace in our smallness. A Higher Power fills the space left by our ego.

It Works: How and Why describes the light of truth. This light pierces the thick darkness of denial. We admit we cannot fix ourselves alone. The Red Road to Wellbriety offers a beautiful path forward. Humility involves our correct relationship to the Great Mystery (White Bison, 2002, p. 118). Consequently, we find our place in the circle of life. We stop fighting the universe.

In daily life, it can be difficult sometimes to feel like you are not the center of the universe, the star of the show. But I realize that I am just a tiny piece of a much greater picture. A small, but important cog in the workings of this world.

I think I’m a vital, purposeful part of this Cosmic journey. I believe that God has given each one of us a unique role to play in this universe that he holds together…

My world definitely revolves around me, however I acknowledge that other people’s worlds revolve around them. Everything I experience is filtered through the lens of my own perception and so I can only see things as they relate to me. It’s a very selfish point of view, but is t every point of view subjective anyway? I don’t know, maybe I’m misunderstanding the question.

I am aware of my ego and its follies. One troupe I do not, nor have not entertained is being the center of things. I am a part of the whole, I am grateful to exist and contribute to a healthy society, not coveting the need to be all things to all things. I am grateful for my higher power and its ability to own that, while allowing me to simply be me.

Thank you for sharing recovery with me. Grateful.

I think, I think kind of small. Due to me thinking smaller, I thought living in a smaller town would be up my alley. There is a vast thinking part to me as well. I am the main part in my my life, but revolves around me(moi) may be too much own centeredness. To me I play or am a major part in the world, and think how can I become an even larger part in the wor orld. Without our fair shares in the world, we can feel left out, or forgotten. Being not a part of the singular binary, can make me feel left out. Having a voice and making me more visible in the world is definitely important to me (moi).

This still feels like the beginning of the journey to me. Sometimes I’m riding on cloud nine and as happy as a clam … then moments later I’m struck with emotions so overwhelming they defy definition. Great elation and despair are huge mysteries for me.

What Margot said is similar to my experience. I asked God to make me his messenger/assistant. And, that my life could be sacrificed if it would make more of a difference. Now I believe we are all part of God and we do exactly what we are meant to do. I know I’m an individual in regards the exact combination of values, tastes, personality traits, etc. But at my core I’m just like everyone else. And my alcoholism isn’t all really different from anyone elses. Similar causes, similar thought patterns, etc. So I guess I’m learning to feel more connected to others.

Even in recovery when i forget the basics of reading, prayer and meditation, thats ego and pride getting in the way of a closer relationship with God, which brings me closer to drinking or using.

When I was younger I used to pray that God would appear to me, make some unmistakable sign, single me out from all the rest as a special, beloved child. Then I turned away from religion and most painfully, from my Higher Power for many years. Those were often painful years – years filled with confusion and emptiness despite having a loved and loving family. When I finally crawled into the rooms of Al-Anon, I felt immediate relief. How Margot got her groove back? Margo got her God back. Thanks, HP, for everything.
